Unable to get Windows to start.

Suddenly I can't get my computer to start. It gets to the 'boot from' sequence then I get a blank screen and nothing else happens.

I have loaded the installation disc and run repair, but this advises that there are no problems found, and there are no restore points for system restore.

Unfortunately I can't create a Windows Defender Offline Tool as the m/c in question is 32 bit and my other m/c's available are 64 bit.

Any suggestions please?

Have you tried booting it on safemode? Maybe running some malware scans and checking your startup programs from there...

And have you had any recent hardware or driver installations?

Check to make sure your OS drive is first or second only to the optical drive in your boot order in the bios. If you change anything make sure you save by hitting F10 key. Report back what you find.

Vertex, I can't boot into safe mode.
Linnemeyehere, my OS drive is first in boot order followed by the optical drive.

When trying to start, the boot sequence commences and quickly gets to 'verify ..(something)', and then nothing.

Is the HD detected in BIOS setup? If not check the cables, test the HD with maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, or replace the HD.

Otherwise work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start which include first step Malwarebytes scan from Safe Mode, or alternative bootable AV's, then everything else possible that can be done leading up to if necessary rescuiing files to run Recovery or the superior Clean Reinstall.

Hi gregrocker - thanks for the comments. I played around with various things, but to no avail, and finished up doing a clean reinstall.
Needless to say all's well now - just got to transfer the backed up files.

Now that your OS and programs are freshly installed, you might do an image of the HD using Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download Next time you will only have to restore the image and you are ready to go.
