Hi,

I have a laptop with Windows 7 and another with Windows Vista. The one with Windows 7 is in a domain as it is provided by my employer.

I have a home network with a linksys wireless router. The router is connected to a DSL modem. Once I connect my laptops to the router over wifi, I am able to access internet from both of them.

The ipconfig of the laptops shows as below:
Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Windows 7
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Windows Vista
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Now, I am able to ping Windows Vista laptop from the one running Windows 7 (ping 192.168.0.2 from 192.168.0.3 works). However, I am unable to ping Windows 7 laptop from the Vista laptop (ping 192.168.0.3 from 192.168.0.2 gives a time out).

I initially thought that something may be wrong with my router, but since I am able to do a one way ping, I dont think that is the reason.

Further, if I start a web server (ex: IIS or Apache) on my Windows 7 laptop, I am not able to access its home from the Windows Vista machine by using the URL http://192.168.0.3
The problem is not just with ICMP (ping) but also with TCP.

I am not sure if I have to do anything with the Windows 7 firewall, as disabling that did not help.

I have disabled IP6 and set the wireless connection to home group in the windows 7, but that did not help either.

Please suggest if I am missing something here.

Thanks,
Kishor

As far as I know homegroup requires IPv6. You can test the problem by creating a new network connection using workgroup which uses IPv4.

Let us know if you need help with any of this

Thanks Ken. I changed the network location of the wireless connection from "Home network" to "Work network" and this did not help. I am not sure if I implemented your instructions correctly. Please advise.

Are you running Windows Firewall on either of the boxes? It is possible that, if running, it is ingesting the ping from the other machine.

can you type cmd in search>then type>
ipconfig /all > %userprofile%\desktop\ipdetails.txt

This will generate a file called ipdetails.txt. Upload this to us.

Let us know if you need help with that
