Hi, I hope somebody can help with this. I have turned off homegroup after realizing it was an all or nothing prospect. I prefer to set who can access certain files and who doesn't because the whole family and the sometimes guests can have access to some pc's in the house.

The problem is when I turned homegroup off to both pc's using windows 7 I can no longer share folders. I can see them from the other pc but can't open the shared folders.

I get the message "you do not have permission to access ...."

A few points:
All pc's are in the same workgroup
All pc's have the same users and passwords
Enabled the appropriate users in advanced sharing under permissions in the sharing tab

Even tried to allow those same users under security tab-edit-add

Funny thing is it was sharing after I turned homegroup off for a few days then it stopped sharing and I didn't change anything except to disallow some users access to an external drive.

I suspect it may be a problem with inherited permissions but I know very little about these areas.

You might prefer, set a WORKGROUP instead of the Native Windows 7 Homegroup:

I believe I found the problem.

The problem was pc B couldn't gain access to the shared folders on pc A.

It seems the "homegroup" credentials on pc A were still stored in the user account advanced settings even though I stopped the "homegroup" on both pc's. When I removed that, the shared folders were now available to the permitted users on the network.

Allright then...
