Unable to update OS.

Hi, due to Windows 10 failing on my laptop several times and having failed to take it back to the previous installed OS (Windows 7) I was forced to buy a new hard drive and fresh install Windows 7 (SP1 included in CD).
I am successful with the install but am not able to update the OS or any other programmes installed on this system.
Each time I try to update Windows 7 I get the following message: Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.
Can anyone help me with this please?

Manually install KB3112343 and check for updates again.

Hi Rugbynut,
Wouldn't be unusual if you still have troubles updating as you swapped hard drives,
(What was wrong with your old one??).
Can you complete your specs Especially the model of your comp.
