Hang in there Noel's been really busy.

When was the last time you:

  • Restarted your machine and then checked for updates?
  • When was the last time you checked for updates?

Back in your post #7 you had error 80072f78
If you receive Windows Update error 80072f78, 80090305, or 8009033f while checking for updates, it might be caused by a connection interruption between your computer and the Windows Update servers.

Close Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then run Windows Update again. You can also wait for Windows Update to run at its next scheduled time.

An automatic troubleshooter is available that fixes some problems with Windows Update, and it might resolve this error for you.

Source: Windows Update error 80072f78, 80090305, or 8009033f
If this doesn't work we will have to concentrate on seeing if WINSOCK.DLL files and protocols are correct:
This error is returned by WSAStartup if the Windows Sockets implementation cannot function at this time because the underlying system it uses to provide network services is currently unavailable.

Users should check:

  • That the WINSOCK.DLL file is in the current path,
  • That the WINSOCK.DLL file is from the same vendor as the underlying protocol stack. They cannot be mixed and matched (WinSock DLLs must be supplied by the same vendor that provided the underlying protocol stack).
  • That they are not trying to use more than one Windows Sockets implementation simultaneously. If there is more than one WINSOCK DLL on your system, be sure the first one in the path is appropriate for the network subsystem currently loaded.
  • The Windows Sockets implementation documentation to be sure all necessary components are currently installed and configured correctly.

First some questions to form a plan of action:

  1. Your computer Manufacturer/Model Number is not filled in, did you build this machine yourself or was it built by a company?
  2. Do you have a bootable disk to do a repair install, if necessary?
  3. Did you try to run the Fix-it tool found in my explanation of your 80072f78 error?
  4. Were you messing around and possibly deleted some files?
  5. Were you having any other problems than the ones that brought you here, like any other erratic behaviour within the last month or so with any other programs? Anything, no detail is too small.
  6. What do you use for internet connectivity? Did you install a NIC or did it come with the computer?
  7. I see you use MSE, when was the last time you ran any full malware scans?
  8. I would like you to run this tool: http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ne-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html
  9. When you finish with the MGADiag Tool and post its results, please update and run a full MSE scan. I would also like you to use and run a full MBAM scan. Post back with any results, good or bad.
  10. I still might have one or two of our members stop by to do more aggressive scans to check for malware.
It is getting late here on my side of the Planet, I will check back later.

~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~
snowboi, I'd like to see what the problem is with MSE, if you have it installed Windows Defender should be disabled.
Go to Control Panel >Administrative tools >Services Scroll down to Windows Defender. What is the "Startup Type"? It should be disabled.
If it is not click on it to open and then set to disabled under the drop down box by "Startup Type". Click APPLY and OK your way out. Close out all other programs, then run a full MSE scan.
If you still get the error message try running this fix-it: Error message when you run Windows Defender: "Error Code 0x800106ba" , then try to run a full MSE scan.
Post results good and/or bad whether or not it ran.
I have chores, will try to be back in a few hours.
There is always a risk with such a procedure, so back up to external media first.
However, in theory, a repair install should leave all programs installed, and data intact - although a few settings will revert to their default state, and may need to be adjusted.
As Noel has pointed out, there is always that risk when doing a repair install. Please prepare, and read to accustom yourself to the Information, Note, Tip boxes and steps for the procedure.
You can print out the tutorial, but you will lose the visual aids that Brink added to the tutorial after certain steps to help show what you should be looking at. If that is a concern you can use a screen capture program to capture a complete tutorial.
As long as you have your Data and Programs backed up, the installation disks for any Device Drivers and are prepared for the procedure you should be okay.
I see by your system specs you have two HDD's installed, WD Green 2TB, and a Plextor 250gb SS.
Where do you have the operating system installed, the WD or plextor?
My apologies for the delay, life intervened.
I wanted you to do a CHKDSK on the drive you had the OS installed on, and for the earlier model SSD's there is a risk involved. I looked, but couldn't tell if Plextor has a chkdsk for their SSD's.
If you have an M1 or M2, I don't know for sure what would happen, but if you have an M3 or M5 then I'd say it should be okay to run Windows Disk Check on your SSD, you just shouldn't run defrag's. With anything there is always a risk.
From earlier repair attempts you should have backups of your personal information, if you don't have any backups for the SSD, you should make one before you attempt this.
Follow Option One, Step 7: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
   Note
There is a lot that can happen doing a CHKDSK on a SSD more than I can explain here. If you don't mind waiting a bit, let me ask for more help.
