Unable to update windows 7

When I ask for Windows update to check for updates, I get a popup that says Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

The pc has been restarted several times.

This has been a problem starting back in December 2017. The method below seems to fix it. Be sure to read through & follow it exactly. If this doesn't fix it straight away, you may need to try an earlier date reset.

"Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running, You may need to restart your computer".

This is exactly the message you get when the AuthCab has expired. Doing the following seems to fix it:

The date on the computer has to be reset & to do that follow this:

To reset the date on the computer Right Click on the Clock at bottom RH corner of the screen, select Change Date & Time Settings, when that opens click on the Internet Time tab, Then select Change Settings, then untick Synchronise with Internet Time Server, be sure to tick OK, then select the Date & Time tab, Then select Change Date & Time & set the date back to 3 Dec, 2017.

Then reboot the computer & then run Check for Updates in Windows Update, it should update to the 3 Dec. In some cases you may need to try an earlier date if the 3rd doesn't work.

Then reboot, reset Internet time Synch, change computer date to today's date, re run Check for Updates in Windows Update & it should check for Updates & came back with Windows is up to date, with the latest updates installed.

This method should retain all your Update History as well.


The reason for this procedure, is that Windows accesses an AuthCab during the start-up procedure that Authorises access to the Windows Update download site. This authorisation expired on 3 Dec for a lot of users & access get blocked to the Windows Update site.

By running the repair I listed above, resetting the computer date & rebooting provides access to Update site at which MS have now reset the expiry of that AuthCab which gets installed on your computer, so it can now download & install Updates. Of course it is then necessary to reset the date on the computer & re run Check for Updates to bring it completely up to date.

Unfortunately that exercise in changing dates did nothing to correct the popup error message.

Did you follow the directions exactly. Also did you untick the Internet Time Server. If you did not do that the date change will not work. I did suggest that if the 3rd of Dec did not work to try an earlier date.

What was the date of the last Update installed on your computer, before you got this message. This information could be important, so could you post that back please.

Prior to today the most recent update was 10/3/2017 KB4019990

Today I manually installed KB4093118 which is a cumulative update.

I again did your exercise exactly using a date of Dec. 2. The results were the same - no joy.

I had this yesterday on two computers and read a fix that was posted as an option on here which was to navigate, computer/windows/software distribution folder and delete its contents, then try the check for downloads again an it all worked perfectly for me on 2 computers with that same message.
Don't just do it though as I am no expert make sure that is correct

When you say the last Update before this problem was 10/3/2017 I assume you are using the US date system that puts the month first & then the day. With our system we put the day first & then the month. That's why I always use the name of the actual month.

You could try running the repair I mentioned above & setting the date back to before the 3rd October 2017, try the 2nd & see if that works.
