My name's andy... and I messed up (whew, weight off shoulders)
I'm ashamed to admit this but it is what it is and I need to correct it.
I was having an issue with sharing folders on one of my windows desktops, particularly "There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper".
So I found this There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper « Russ Brown Development . Seemed to be one of the few solutions out there. I ran the registry fix and it seemed to fix my issues. I'm not expert with the registry, but I have been in and out of it since Win95 so I feel confident when I make changes. This time I was to confident. For the first time that I can remember I didn't backup the registry before I merged the .reg files.

Problem now is that I can't get my firewall up and running. Going to restore defaults does nothing and I can't start the Windows firewall service. I've tried CCcleaner which did nothing. I'm not totally sure that the .reg edit caused this, or if this firewall issue was what was causing the issue in the first place. Either way I want to undo the registry merge I did. Attached are the two .reg files I merged. I opened them up to see what they did, to undo them, but there's a little to much greek in these ones. And of course system restore was turned off (left over from switching out c: drives a month ago and never set back up). However I do have a week's worth of backups of my c: from my Acronis True Image backups (can I just drag my registry hives over and and overwrite the current ones?)
any help would be great.
thanks.

when did those problems happen? I mean when did you import the 2 reg files?

Service "base filtering engine" startup type=automatic? Can you start it manually? If not... error message please. Also check eventlog for a related event. post it

Windows firewall depends on BFE, so fix bfe first

I imported the reg files on the 6th, so 2 days ago.

Here's the error I get when trying to start BFE (yes it was set to automatic):

Is there any reason you you can't restore the last image you created before making these changes?
If you do just "copy/restore" the registry hive, other changes you made may be out of sync and cause other problems.

Not particularly. I guess that is the reason I do the backup every night. Guess I'm just nervous about restoring the image. The few times I've ever had to recover an image of my system drive, it's always led to issues (mostly that they never worked right). Figured if I could avoid it then I would. But I'll give it a try.

I recovered from my backup and everything worked as far that goes. I made sure that edited registry entries were reverted back. However I still cannot get the firewall up and running.
I tried the MS Fix It again, and it said it fixed it (the windows firewall service was missing, which I could tell from looking through the services.msc). I rebooted and the service as well as BFE appears. BFE is started, but when I try to start the Firewall service I get:
Windows could not start the windows firewall on local computer.
for more information, review the system event lof. if this is a
non-microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to
service-specific errror code 5
Any ideas? Should I start a new thread since technically i was able to fix the "undo registry change" part. thanks.

I was able to get everything back up and running by using the firewall repair in the tweaking.com app from this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/system-s...ill-not-start-error-code-5-access-denied.html

Thanks for the help. I do love this forum.

I read you eventlog. BFE and FIREWALL can't start due to... access denied!

In elevated command prompt:
Code:
reg save HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BFE bfe.hiv
reg save HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MpsSvc mpssvc.hiv
And post mpssvc.hiv and bfe.hiv. Put them in zip file first, because hiv is not allowed as upload type

You can do a system restore to a point it time prior to problems. I don't think importing values in registry caused it btw. It looks like a permission problem on the registry keys
