"Unexpected Shutdown" every time computer sleeps or hibernates

My laptop often suffers from BSOD after windows updates, and I grin and bear it until it stops, in 2 or 3 days, which it has always done in the past. However, this is insane. Since my computer installed updates last Saturday, I have not been able to put it to sleep or hibernate without having to subsequently do a hard restart, with the "windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" screen. I then get the little notice that normally shows up after a regular BSOD, detailing the issue, but it contains no details- it simply says windows was unable to find a solution for the problem. There is no expand option to see the details. Please note, I have not actually seen a BSOD. This is only happening when I put it into sleep or hibernate, in which case, it seems to get stuck, showing a glowing black screen or simply not powering off when told to. The only way I can get it to turn back on is to unplug it and remove the battery.

This also may be related- Sometime around Saturday, my battery went dead, as they are want to do after 2 years. Currently, I am keeping my laptop plugged in at all times, with a 60% battery that won't charge to protect me from bumps to the power cord while I wait for my new one.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit (OEM, re-installed summer 2011)
Full Retail Sony Vaio VPCCW17FX

I had that same system and similar problems. Update SFEP.sys by using Sony® Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver to download it from a newer model. That solved the blue screen crashes during sleep for me.

Also, make sure your Atheros Wireless AR9285 is up to date and you get the critical update for the wireless component.

To install the wireless driver update, do the following steps.

1. Click Start Menu
2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
3. Click Manage
4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
5. Expand Network adapters
6. Right click the device
7. Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
8. Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
9. DO NOT restart your computer
10. Install the latest driver for the device.

Alternatively:

1. Login as an adminstrative user.
2. Click Start Menu
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click Hardware and Sound
5. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
6. Expand Network adapters
7. Right click the device
8. Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
9. Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
10. DO NOT restart your computer
11. Install the latest driver for the device.

I had issues installing the latest Atheros driver until I did the above. If you did not do the above to update the first time, the driver may not have successfully updated.

one question- are you sure that Sony® Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver is right for my model? It is not listed as compatible on the linked website. Thank you for this, I will look at everything carefully/follow your directions in a few hours when I am out of class.

Create a system restore point first, just in case. I am 99.9% sure it will work, though. It worked for my exact same model (VPCCW17FX), and it appears that Sony uses the same sfep.sys for all their newer models.

How long should it take to uninstall the atheros? It has been going for about 20 mins.

It should take seconds... I would not be surprised if that is the problem with your system. I had a similar problem due to registry errors in my system caused by VAIO Care's registry cleaner (registry cleaning is not needed in Windows 7 and is known to break the system rather than fix it). You may have to uninstall in Safe Mode, but I am guessing you have corruption in your system at this point that will not be resolved without reverting to your factory image or at least doing a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html. Try uninstalling in Safe Mode first. If other problems develop, backup your important data and do a repair install.

ok so I went into safe mode and was able to uninstall the driver, as well as re install with the update. I'm about to check if it worked to fix my problem.
