Today I had an update come to my Dell with the above name and the following number: 7.6.7600.256 -- does anyone know what this is - I have never received such an update before - when I booted my machine it also was saying" machine update 44 of 44 or words to that effect. It moved so fast I didn't have time to really read and comprehend it. Everything seems to be working fine so hopefully this update is legit. Thanks,

I got the same update yesterday evening and saw the same words above in bold this morning when I first booted up.

Nothing to worry about. :)
Improvements made to version 7.6.7600.256 of the Windows Update Agent

  • Hardened Windows Update infrastructure so that the Windows Update client will only trust files signed by a new certificate that is used solely to protect updates to the Windows Update client.
  • Strengthened the communication channel used by Windows Update Client to protect it in a similar way.

Thank YOU!!! Obviously, that's a relief. Anymore, there is so much stuff out there just waiting to do evil, my suspicion levels are always high. Really appreciate quick answer.

I was also alarmed when I rebooted, and saw the Update Configuring...!?

I rebooted again, ran updated Emsisoft/MBAM AV scans, and nothing found. :D

It is alarming to see that configuring message and it is not an update that you usually see. It would be nice if there was some way for MS to let people know that a different sort of update is coming their way - like I said, "update 44 of 44" was REALLY strange. I use MBAM and MSE and have yet (so far) to have a problem with any malware or virus attacks. Enjoy your pc and thanks for sharing your experience with this latest MS update.
