Unwanted Protect Status

For many months now I have had the SD card from my camera treated as if it were protected. You can COPY files from it but cannot erase files on it nor MOVE them. It has nothing to do with the card nor the LOCK on thecard. Windows Explorer functions do not offer delete or move. Just copy, etc. Restarting the machine clears this every time. Rather obviously a bug in Windows 7. I suppose it is POSSIBLE that there is some obscure hardware bug in the built-in SD reader in the PC. Since I know with absolute certainty that it was not like this for the first several years using Win7 I am convinced it is a disease introduced by the hundreds of unwanted updates that Microsoft insists on performing without my approval or knowledge. Rampant problem with almost all op sys and devices including cell phones, PCs, etc.
1) How do I get rid of the bug ? 2) How can I halt the unwanted/unauthorized updates?

To stop unwanted updates:
- Under services (services.msc), set WU to manual.
- Open WU (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Change settings) and set Never check and un mark Give me recommended updates.

My computer is set this way and I only install security only updates.

No missing drivers. There have been no config changes in ages. How would drivers be missing ? Seems unrelated to the issue.

Buy a USB SD Card Reader. I did that, and I can read SD cards flawlessly with the new reader. It was about $15 at my local Walmart.

Yes, I have some of those plug-in USB connected SD card readers. They work fine but when the PC decides the SD is protected (which it is not) it does not matter what reader I am using.

My main question was/is: has anyone else seen the disease of unwanted claims by the op sys that SD cards are "protected?"

On your profile specs it says that you have Win 7 HP. Please confirm.

Does the SD card works normally on another computer / card reader?

The suspect SD card does work fine on another computer (my laptop running Windows 10.) I have not in timely fashion (same sitting) tried some other SD card on my Win 7 PC to see if other SD cards exhibit the same unwanted protection disease. Good point -- if/when it happens again I will try and remember to try some other SD card. Meanwhile, I have set my PC to "never check" for updates as you said. How do I know when worthwhile security updates become available ?

INFO to all who may have read this post regarding an unintended / unwanted "protected" SD card: The problem was/is HARDWARE, not the Win 7 op sys. Apparently the tab or contact [in the PC reader slot] which detects the tiny plastic slide on the side of the SD card for Lock or Unlock is faulty. I was able to wiggle the SD card in the slot and eventually get to where the system no longer shows it as "protected." This makes sense all the way around because 1) that SD reader slot had been troublesome mechanically from the day I got the machine many years ago. 2) The SD card read/wrote fine in other machines. 3) The card was a workhorse in my camera literally for years and still is. Sorry to bother folks -- this one was HARDWARE NOT Win 7.
Among other things I WAS WRONG about "restarting the machine fixed the issue every time." That was not true.
