Solved Update for MSE keeps appearing (KB2310138)

I keep seeing this update. I installed it twice already. It will install with no errors. A couple days later it will show up again saying that I need it.

Maybe it's new virus definitions but Microsoft uses the same KB number?

The MSE KB2310138 update is the current series update, but if you look in Windows Update & select View Update History, you should see that KB number followed in brackets by (Definition x.xxx.xxx.x). The definition update number is the important one & it changes with each update, so check those definition updates & don't worry too much about the actual KB number.

MS use the the one KB number for MSE until a newer KB number is needed & the actual definition updates are added as they become available.

Do you have MSE set to "Turn on Real Time Protection", which is found under Settings in the MSE application screen.

Thanks for getting back. All you need to do is make sure that MSE is updating & this can be checked in MSE application screen under the Update tab. This will show when the last update was installed & it's Definition number.

If it's a while since the last Update time you can run Update Definitions, which should bring you up to date.

You can also check in Windows Updates & look in the View Update History & the MSE updates should be listed there as well.

I usually check for updates in Windows Updates every morning, soon after I start my computer, which brings me up to date with MSE & other Windows updates as well.

Checked for updates this morning.
Again, KB2310138 is listed. This time I made note of the definition and compared it to the last update. They are in fact different.

Last update: (Definition 1.233.356.0), this update: (Definition1.233.402.0)

That's like 5 Microsoft Security Essentials updates in the last couple days.

That's right. Definition updates are frequently made, to keep up with the latest viruses, etc.. You get the latest MSE updates when Check for Updates & download them.

Yes.

There's a rash of new viruses/malware every day, unfortunately.
It's normal for all security programs i use to release new definition updates many times per day to protect against them, as best they can.

I haven't used MSE in many years, i replaced it with another AV.
When i last used MSE, i set up a scheduled task to check for MSE definition updates hourly.
I got up to 10 new definition updates per day.

I have used MSE for many years.

Keep up with new viruses and malware is a challenge to all anti virus and anti malware programs.
I manually update my MSE and and Malwarebytes Premium several times a day.

I also check my browser and all it's plug in's and add on's once a day.

**It's a never ending battle and will always be. Seems like their are more bad guys than good guys.

MSE updates always start with this. (KB2310138) then the new update version.

My does MSE even need to update through Windows Update? It should on it's own. I don't want Windows to update on it's own, though. For reasons like that recent update that had telemetry hidden in it. Fortunately GWX Control Panel blocks it.
