I've been trying to install a .msu pack downloaded from Microsoft's website but when I try to run it I get the message "Update is not applicable to your computer". I made sure I was trying to install the proper architecture version (x64) so I'm not sure why it's telling me it's not applicable. I've tried with several other packages I downloaded that were Windows Update Standalone Installer packages as well but got the exact same message.

Maybe these updates required to install any other updates before?

Too many damages to attempt to fix it,theoretically the only solution is to make repair install http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html,but from your system spec you have HP laptop,so you cannot apply this.

Question:

Do you have any issue with hard disk?Issues with hard disk are very suspected in such kind of extensive damages. All damages relate to already installed components.

Possibly you will need any better tool to diagnose your hdd Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

I believe the hard disk is fine.

I knew there are some packages missing as I removed them myself with vLite. However, the packages I removed were very low level and things I never use. Here is what I removed:

- All languages except for English (US)
- Accessibility, Inbox Games, Speech Support, Windows Sidebar and Gadgets
- Modem, Scanner, TV Tuner Drivers
- Media Center, Music and Video samples, Sample pictures, screensavers, slideshow, sound recorder, windows media player
- IIS, Remote Desktop and Assistance, Remote Desktop Client, SNMP, Simple TCPIP services, telnet client, telnet server, windows mail
- remote registry, windows search
- bitlocker drive encryption, DRM, IMAMPv2 burning support, MSMQ, parental controls, security center, system restore, tablet pc, windows defender

Does anything above look like it could be causing the issues?

Hi,

I've just found this article on the Microsoft support site relating to your Windows Update error code.

When you try to install Windows Vista or Windows 7 updates or components by using the Windows Update Web site, you may receive an error message. Or, if you try to turn Windows features on or off, no features may appear in the Windows Features dialog box. This article contains two step-by-step methods that you can use to try to restore corrupted or incorrect system files and settings.

Hope it helps :)

hotfix KB978542 relate to Windows Mail.MS10-030: Vulnerability in Outlook Express and Windows Mail could allow remote code execution

Issue with KB979687 (this is hotfix for WordPad MS10-083: Description of the security update for WordPad: October 12, 2010) I'm not sure maybe this one:

- Accessibility, Inbox Games, Speech Support, Windows Sidebar and Gadgets

Personally I do not prefer removing anything in the system, many times due to kind of operation you may remove something more than you want.If you don't need any function just disable it.Saying true nobody know what will happen if you remove built-in package, and even authors of vLite or similar softs may don't know about all consequences.Such kind of informations are very poorly documented.

Mike,
You are going to need to do a complete reinstall of Win 7 and this time stay away from such things as vlite. Win 7 is a marvelous program and needs no help from 3rd party programs.

I hear you. I've had no problems in the past using nLite with XP. I had Vista for awhile but didn't like it so went back to XP which I've been using up until this past week when I decided to move into Windows 7 as I was noticing less and less support for XP (especially the x64 version).

The reason I used vLite for Win 7 right off the bat was because I wanted it to run as fast as possible without any unnecessary programs bogging it down. You all seem to know quite a bit about Win 7 which I am grateful for. So I will proceed to install the full version of Win 7, but would like to optimize it as best I can. If you guys have any suggestions for post installation optimization, I would love to hear about it. Thank you for your help.

Win 7 and xp are worlds apart.

Forget any post-install optimization.

Win 7 is optimized. Win 7 is the result of a learning curve on the part of MS.

You can only occassionally cleanup after Win 7 by using Win 7's Disk Clean up and even less frequently Win 7's built-in defragmenter.

Install Win 7, learn how to use Win 7, ask Win 7 questions here.

We have already made all of the mistakes and hope that we can help others avoid making the same mistakes we made.
