Updates failed, yet still appear on 'Installed Updates' list.

Greetings,

I recently built a computer and the operating system I've installed is Windows 7 Professional. Everything was going fine till a massive batch of updates had to be installed (about 175 in total).

When I booted up my computer, it was stuck on the 'configuring installed updates'-'failed to configure updates, reverting back to previous state' screen for about 40 minutes, after which my computer booted normally.

I ran into some weird bugs like Windows claiming that I had never updated the computer nor installed any updates despite the update history showing several updates that had been performed in the past few days, and after running the Windows Update Troubleshooter, resetting Windows Update through the 'Services' menu, and deleting every file in the SoftwareDistribution folder, I simply installed the 175 updates in small batches.

I should mention that after running the Windows Update Troubleshooter, I did get a message telling me that my Service Registration was "missing or corrupt", but I think that's been fixed after performing the other two steps I mentioned above. I also ran sfc /scannow and everything checked out.

The issue that remains, however, is that a trio of updates seemingly failed to install (according to the 'Update History' list), yet they appear on the list of installed updates (accessed through the 'Programs and Features' section in the Control Panel).

They are:

KB3019215

So the question is: should I uninstall these updates and redownload and reinstall them? Or should I simply leave everything as is? I've read that hard drives and RAM can also cause these issues, and though I really doubt my drive or my RAM are the issues here, if it helps, I'm using a Samsung 850 Evo 500GB SSD (no other drives at the moment) and have 8GBs of 1600MHz RAM installed (2x4GB, manufactured by G.Skill).

Another strange thing I noticed is that on the list of installed updates it said that my computer has had a total of 215 updates, and after installing another 4 updates, I'm still seeing a total of 215 updates. I guess this is just a minor glitch or something of the sort?

Any and all help would be much appreciated!

I just swapped out a hard drive in a laptop this weekend with a Samsung 840, not Pro. I had used it in a different system, thus had to wipe out the MBR and delete partition and all that to get it bootable and get Windows on it. I'm using 64 bit Windows 7 Pro. I applied all the usual updates over Saturday and Sunday. It "should" have been up to date, but the last time I manually checked for updates, it took over 30 minutes and was still looking. I gave up and didn't pay much attention. When I went to shut it down last night, it said it had 215 updates to install. I hit the Shutdown button and it proceeded to install them. It took about 3 hours to install them. Since I didn't pay attention prior to shutting down, I didn't have an opportunity to see what it was installing. SP1 was one of the updates that got installed late Saturday, so you'd think something is crazy out of order to still need 215 updates. I think I installed 20 or 30 updates after the SP1.

When I boot it up tonight, I'll take a look to see if I have any failed updates.

The only thing I do remember 'failed' was the SP1 didn't install the first time and had to redownload and install again, which did succeed. That might have been because too many things to install at once. I had to install more device drivers, like for the USB 3.0 and whatever else AMD wanted to install at the same time Windows wanted to install SP1. So a few reboots fixed that. It would be interesting to see if anything else is failing?

As for your question, I don't have an opinion. I know on another box I built, I moved my profiles to a different drive and am fooling my applications to install to the "D" drive and not the "C" drive where the OS is installed, thus some updates install and some fail. But the failures are because Windows is pissed at me for trying to trick the hardcore applications to install to the D drive against their wish. I really don't care. That machine is used to edit videos, and I really don't want Microsoft messing with it. The other machines are primarily used for surfing the net, so if they get corrupted, I'll just reinstall Windows.

You could try Windows Update - Reset option 3 to start with.

Microsoft update doesn't provide the updates in any particular order. If one or more updates fail, it's usually because a prerequisite or prerequisites update(s) was/were not installed yet. When I do repair installs of win7 happens all the time.

If KB2843630 isn't listed as important you can choose whether to install it or not.

Do you think the 215 updates is legitimate or is Microsoft trying to install Win10 against my wish? That seems like a lot of updates. I know its an old OS, but why did it take two whole days to get around to wanting to install that many updates? You'd think it would have installed the SP1 sooner than what it did (thus eliminating the need for the prior updates) and then (hopefully) group some of the newer updates to help prevent the need for some older ones. Hopefully they installed OK and I won't have to go thru what Dosan123 got hit with.

I have 220 updates installed and I don't have any W-10 junk.

Caution:: Never turn off your computer when the updates are being installed. It can make all kinds of problems.

Thanks Layback, I was able to set my laptop to never shut anything down, which was helpful since the install took 3-4 hours. So we'll see if there are any problems when I get home. I had heard some stuff about MS forcing W10 down our throats, so I was just suspicious. Haven't seen anything yet.

You will probable get some W-10 trash but you can work that out once your updating is done.

I figured that the 215+ updates were standard procedure for a brand new computer. These were all updates I had to install very shortly after I installed my network card and granted my PC internet access. I haven't seen an Win 10-related content, the updates are mostly for security from what I can tell.

No worries on the late reply! We've all got lives and computers are always trying to steal them from us.

All three of the updates that failed to install are labeled as 'important', but strangely a framework update is merely 'recommended'.

Anyway, I had read about the possibility of updates failing to install due to issues with prerequisites, but I wasn't sure if that might be my issue since I had installed over 215 updates and they were all automatic/suggested by Microsoft, as opposed to manual downloads. At any rate, I figured I'd wait at least a week before doing anything. Maybe there will have been new updates sent out, after which I'll try reinstalling the failed pieces.
