Updates install over and over

Every time I shut down the computer the same two updates are installed. They are both Security Updates for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 on Windows 7, Vista, Server 2008, and Server 2008 R2 for x64, KB2898869 and KB2901126. Windows update says they are important. I downloaded them in mid February, and they have been installing ever since.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional that came pre-installed in my Lenovo ThinkCenter PC. The processor is an Intel quad core i5 64 bit. The PC has 4Gb of ram and 500Gb hard drive. I've had it since November. Windows System says I have service pack 1.

If I go into Windows Update and manually install the two, I get a message that they were successfully installed. And, if I look at update history, it says the installation was successful. But, if I look at installed updates, they are not there. And, the next time I shut down they will be installed again.

Can someone help me get out of this loop?

Thank you for your help.

Don

Hello and welcome dwheels mate run these first to eliminate any problems with the basic filing system there are extra options in Option 2 in the chkdsk.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

The other thing you can do is to Hide the updates but I don't know how important they are - but if you set your updates to show as in my pic when the update is offered right click on it and then click Hide and it will to come up again.

But as I said I don't know how important these are to be absolutely honest.

*You could try this first it may correct the problem Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Centre

Hi,
I believe the update started out as a Optional update from,
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB2858725)
Download size: 53.0 MB
This was issued 11/26/13
If you downloaded this Optional update anything in the future might be a Important update,
I personally didn't do this Optional/ Recommended update = I saw no personal need to be able to write windows apps which is one of the perks to this update ;)

Thanks for the suggestions. So far I installed the System Update readiness tool. It's really BIG. It installed OK, but there was no option to run anything. So, I assume it runs at start-up. I re-started Windows and it didn't make any difference.

I tried the Microsoft help line and chatted with a young lady who told me the problem would require advanced troubleshooting. And, since my Windows was pre-installed, I would have to pay $99 for premium support. I thanked her and said I would work on it some more.

I'm confused by the Windows Update Reset referenced by UNI. I read all the posts in the thread. Will it cause all the updates to reload? I wonder if I could locate the files that don't work, delete them, and re-download whether new copies would fix the problem.

Thanks again for your help.

I don't seem to have KB2858725. Maybe that's my problem. Do you think I should get it and see if it fixes the other two?

The System Update Readiness Tool (SRUT) just runs once during the installation. It tries to make sure that lots of things are as they should be.

~~~
I'm confused by the Windows Update Reset referenced by UNI. I read all the posts in the thread. Will it cause all the updates to reload?
~~~

I would try option three of that tutorial. It removes files that are used to track which updates that you need. Once the computer restarts, the Windows Update service rebuilds the some of the files that were removed. You can manually check for Windows Updates to rebuild the database of needed updates (this can take a while). I've done this "reset" on both XP and W7 dozens of times. Sometimes it fixes the issue; sometimes not.

If the updates that you had been seeing install over and over are needed, then you will indeed see then download again. Hopefully, they will install only once this time.http://www.sevenforums.com/members/noeldp.html

~~~
I wonder if I could locate the files that don't work, delete them, and re-download whether new copies would fix the problem.
~~~
We can try that (in a slightly different way) after we see if the reset works.

If you don't feel comfortable running the Windows Update reset batch file offered in option three of that tutorial, then perhaps you would like to run Microsoft's version: How do I reset Windows Update components?

There are a few differences between the two versions, the main difference being that Microsoft's version copies certain folders in case you want to undo parts of the "fixit". I've never undone any part of a Windows Update reset.

I ran the fsc /verifyonly and it did not find any violations.
Then I ran the Microsoft version of reset Windows update components. Below is the result.
Apparently I have some missing or corrupt files.
This may be a stupid question, but can I undo all updates and start from scratch? Sorry if I seem a bit slow. I'm 74 and I never was the sharpest tack in the box.

Thanks again,

Don

I ran the SFC scan and it found nothing wrong.

I downloaded and installed the SURT. It took about 15 minutes to install.

There are no error codes.

I am attaching the zipped CBS folder.

then reboot twice
Then install each from the standalone download, rather than Windows Update.

Download Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 on Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 from Official Microsoft Download Centre

(install the lower KB no first then reboot, and install the other)

Then do a Check for Updates and see what's found.

Noel,

Thank you for the suggestions. Since the two updates don't show on the installed page, I figured maybe they don't need to be un-installed. So, I downloaded the manual updates you listed and tried to run them. But, I got a message that something was blocking their installation. Of course it didn't say what.

My understanding of .net framework is that it is a collection of routines used by certain other software. From what I've been reading here and elsewhere, installing and maintaining it is a real can of worms. Shame on Microsoft. I don't have a lot of programs on my machine, so there is a chance I may not even need it. For now, I''m just going to mark the two updates as hidden, and hope I don't get hacked because of it. If I have more problems I will try the un-install you pointed me to. Thank you for taking the time to try to help.

Don
