Updates shutting down PC without warning

Visiting a friend who complains that WIndows Update will shut down his PC without warning in the middle of his work, then install Updates. I figured he was missing the popup warning which enables user to extend timeout for Updates restart.

However this just happened to me in the middle of a forums post being done on his PC. The PC just shut down without warning and started installing a single Update.

I am wary to set his Updates from Automatic to Manual install since he may let them pile up. Is there anything I can do to assure he'll get the normal warning popup from System Tray?

WUD is set to Show Icon and Notifications in tray Notification settings.

Thanks, Shawn. I should have guessed there's a tutorial. Bookmarked.

I don't remember seeing the countdown box for a long time. Was it replaced by the static timeout box shown on the right in the comparison illustration?

Are there only certain Updates that trigger the countdown box?

And if he never was seeing the countdown box before it rudely shut down unannounced do you think it was anomalous to this install?

Hopefully the reg patch will fix it. He had 19 + 4 queued so they are installing now. We'll leave it on to see what happens.

Anytime mate.

I haven't seen the restart notice in a while either. There's usually a Windows Update notification area message that pop-ups as well for this. I'm not sure why he didn't see it unless it may have been hidden behind some other opened window.

You would normally get it after installing an "important" or "critical" Windows Update that requires a restart.

Twice now it has failed after installing 98% of the Updates in the pre- and post-OS environment, saying it is reverting. Most of the Updates from the 26th show Failed in Installed Updates. Do you think this is related or pertains more to today's batch of Updates?

Updates update: All installed on the third failure after noticing they were queued on the Shutdown button. Is this a different type of Updates install at Shutdown than what is done with a restart?

Nar, the shut down updates are important and critical Windows Updates that are available to be installed before shutting down. It's just another way to install these updates before shutting down other than normally through Windows Updates. You could use either way to install them.

The restart notice updates are updates that have already been installed, and require a restart to apply.

You might see if doing the shut down will install them and not have them fail anymore.
