I can't get this to work :(

Make an iso image out of the DVD
Make a bootable installation USB stick and use it to install windows 7

Is it booting from the DVD at all?
What is happenign?
after the option to load bios i get a black screen with flashing underscore, looks like pc is trying to load dvd (dvd drive light is flashing) but nothing actually loads and after 30 sec it just loads up xp as normal.
when i go to my computer it shows the dvd drive as normal but no files (as if nothing is actually in the drive, it is working though have tried other cds and a dvd)

I read that but the first step says boot the computer from your Windows 7 installation DVD.
I can't get this to work :(
Make an iso image out of the DVD
Make a bootable installation USB stick and use it to install windows 7
not sure I can do this when the dvd is not recognized? don't i need to transfer the data from the dvd to the usb flashdrive?

Hi,

Sorry this is an obvious question, but are you inserting a DVD into a CDROM drive? Or DVD into DVD drive?

Regards,
Golden

it says DVD-RAM drive on 'my computer' and the front of the actual drive says 'dvd-RW'

I believe it is a SONY DVD RW AW-G170A

I've only got one drive so hopefully it's the right sort of one?:(

Just as a test, what happens if you insert the disk into the CD/DVD drive while in XP, does it do anything?

This dvd was burnt by you from an iso? Or its a pre-manufactured, labelled one?

Also check if theres a firmware update for that drive.

when i insert it the green light on the drive comes on for awhile but no autoplay actually works, nothing loads and nothing is recognized on 'my computer'

I bought it off the website software4students, so 'pre-manufactured' i guess?

do you mean check if there is a firmware update for the dvd drive?

This tells you the disk/burn is bad.

I guess I should try on another PC then and if it doesn't work send it back?

Wait wait wait, you're not the first guy to get that digitalriver thing wrong. Dont try to burn any more disks, go to this page and download the one you ordered. MS released these isos after that snafu.

Download Windows 7 ISO

Then just the key you got with the mail.

not sure what digitalriver is? are they affiliated with software4students?

I am downloading 64-bit Windows 7 Professional x64 ISO, once that is complete I think I am supposed to use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool?

The isos are the same offered to students. All you need to do is burn that iso to dvd using Imgburn or nero or whatever you use.

Use this at only 4x speed with a verify, it never fails with a good ISO, at the link below.

I used the win7 usb/dvd download tool instead of nero or imgburn - I think it's the same thing?

i don't have a blank cd/dvd so trying to use a flashdrive

I selected the .iso file I downloaded from
Download Windows 7 ISO
(64-bit Windows 7 Professional x64 ISO)

and put in a blank usb device so now I see the setup.exe file for win7 on the usb device

unfortunately I can't run it because I have winxp 32, i get a message saying "setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application"

I figured this meant I just needed to load it from boot menu so i selected "removable device" as the #1 boot option but when my pc boots up the usb device flashes but then pc just boots up xp as normal and i dont get an option to install win7 :(
