Upgrade Win 7 home prem to professional using upgrade disk

I bought a Win 7 Professional upgrade disk at retail and want to use it to upgrade a new computer that has Win 7 Home Professional installed. The installation stopped and I was directed to use Windows Anytime Upgrade to do the job. Microsoft expects me to purchase a key in order to perform the upgrade. Can I ignore this and use the disk I have? If so, what's the procedure?

Welcome!

You should be able to use Anytime Upgrade to do that...just give it the product key on the Upgrade package.

You will not be able to do an in-place upgrade from the disc, to the best of my knowledge.

Hi crispbasilisk,

You don't actually need the physical disc to complete the upgrade. When WAU prompts you for the product key, just use the key that came with the Upgrade disc.

Not sure, but why not try the anytime upgrade? I think that they ask for a key and you can give the one that you have. If wrong and they want Credit card etc, you can just log out.

A while ago I bought a Win 7 Professional upgrade disk at retail, but did not use it. Now my wife has bought a new computer loaded with Win 7 Home Premium, and I would like to use my disk to upgrade it. But when I try, Microsoft terminates the installation and tells me to use Windows Anytime Upgrade. That would involve paying $100 or so for a key, when I already have paid more than that for an upgrade disk. Is there a way that I can avoid using Windows Anytime Upgrade, and use my disk instead?

Many have reported being able to use their Retail key in the Anytime Upgrade, so you can try that first.

If not, there is a workaround to change between versions of Win7 which you can post back for.

Yes Walker,

They used the key with anytime upgrade and it worked.

Great, now I have another report of a case that worked.

Before that, I was the only person I knew that had successfully used an upgrade key to do an Anytime upgrade. I could find no one else that had even tried it.

Crispbasilisk did not post, but when he gave rep, it was indicated that the method worked. You can use a retail key for anytime upgrade.
