Upgrading CPU & Motherboard. What do you suggest?

OK this is just to ask your opinion on my next motherboard.

I'm presently running Win7 Ultimate 32 bit on an ASUS motherboard P5N-E- SLI
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 running stock 2.66 GHz

My next processor will by an i7 Intel Quad processor (socket LGA1156)
I expect to have at least 4 gig of memory DDR 3 or 4
Only use 1 graphics card & I'm NOT a gamer.
All my HD are SATA and plenty of room.

So with this information what would be a good quality MB?
I have Gigabyte is a good quality manuf. Any suggestion would be helpful.

Well,

I had a i7 and Downgraded cos I never used the power. If your into making movies and or Big pictures, I realy would not bother too much about the Upgrade.

But thats Just me.

Thanks for your opinion. I guess an i5 would be the next downgrade.

Well if you're gonna upgrade from the 775, I'd skip the 1156 and go right to the 1155.
You don't have to get a powerful i7......you can straddle the fence with an i5.

By the way, I downgraded also. I went from the i7-2600 to i5-2400.
The i7-2600 was too powerful for my needs.

I think an i5 or even an i3 would be good. An i7 may be too powerful for you, an i5 may be just right, but if you're not using that kind of power either, get an i3 with hyper-threading when you need it

I have an i7 in my laptop and it works great. However, with the i7, I'm already discovering that I wish I had more than 8GB RAM. I can run 2 VMs, 3 Adobe programs, Skype video call, and Google Chrome, and my CPU usage is only about 12-19%, while my RAM usage is bordering 75-80%... If you're going for an i7, you might want to look at 8GB RAM at least.

However, if you have no need for that much power, an i3 would work great for you. I had an i3 in my last laptop and it did work very well.. an i3 with 3GB RAM was what I had for close to a year before I upgraded to 4GB RAM and it worked well for general use. I upgraded because I want that extra power for when I really want to use it, but if all you really need is an i3 then get that instead. If you still want speed in the end, I'd go with a Solid State Drive; if you're willing to pay the price of nearly $2/GB...

Ditto on the LGA 1155 and I5, don;t buy old technology for about the same price as new. Either Gigabyte or Asus would be good.

what you plan on doing with the machine, apps you use, anything CPU intensive, is the first question people should ask.
Then they should ask is how much do you want to spend?
Normally, that information should be posted initially so people know what you are looking for and what you want to spend.

I just went through what you are describing. I was going to build a new machine and wanted one that would last for some time. I read all the reviews and looked at many parts and read the reviews for both Intel and AMD. For what I do, there was no question of price to performance. I built an 15-2500K and a P67 board. I have no regrets. It will do anything I want it to do and then some. I have not bogged it down yet. You can look at my stats and see what I came up with.

This is great information and cross talk.
Your opinions are very helpful as it is true to life and that is what I'm able to learn from.
So I may look at an i3 or an i5 processor with 4 gig of memory.
Most of the time I'm on the internet but do have times I'm editing my personal videos.

i5 with 2 sticks of 4gb ram each in a EVGA mobo. Add more sticks as needed, and then for sure budget for a good 64 to 128 SSD. Your system will be bang on target and future proofed for a long time with your usage.

Well, I think all you'll need it an i3 2100. Hyper-threading when you need it and a good price.

maybe somoething like ASUS P8P67 B3 Revision - motherboard - ATX - LGA1155 Socket - iP67 - LGA1155 Socket
this board would be ok. you dont need to be spending lots of money on an expensive board if your not going to need the power..maybe mate the board with an i5 an 4-6 gig of RAM to future proof yourself.. but other than that everyones recommendations are very good and hope you have a good build
