There's no reason for me to re-write the startup repair tutorial when I can just link to an excellent source that already exists.

You're welcome, I'm just trying to give the OP the best possible info to understand how to deal with the whole issue.

I don't want to further confuse the situation. If you're comfortable and on track don't bother reading anymore.

If your original HDD was working ok but you wanted a larger disk - Correct???
If you haven't already done it, leave the original in it's full working condition.
Try whatever advice you like then.

Probably all you needed to do was use the Microsoft Imaging utility to image every partition of the old drive you can tick (System reserved is always included).
Take out your old drive put in the new drive (alone), straight out of the bag it came in, reimage - that's it. The MS software will format, partition etc as per the image.
I did this recently with a new 1TB Barracuda (ST31000528AS).

Disconnect the old HDD & boot to the windows install disk, and at the install now menu type shift+f10
then type the following commands one at a time and press enter after each one:

bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /rebuildbcd
exit

then shut down, restart and your problem will be solved

All i get now is bootMGR is missing

The problem getting the repairs to fix the issue is all the Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are marked as "Active" and that is the way the repair utility is told where to make the repairs, there can be only one marked "Active" for the repairs to work.


Is "Disk 1, I:" the one you want to get booting on its own?



Disconnect the other 2 HDDs and leave only the one you want to repair connected and do the 3 startup repairs out-lined in this tutorial to get it booting independently, then the other HDD can be reconnected.

Its worked now guys thanks alot all of you. Basically i put imy windows install disk and clicked on repair my system and it said an error has been detected would you like fix it and i clicked yes and now the ITB hard drive is my main one. Thanks for taking the time to bother to try and help me.

Good to see you got it running and thanks for the update.



The best thing to do is to mark the other HDDs as "Inactive" so they will not cause future issues; have a look at the snip below for how to that; it has to be done from an elevated command prompt be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

If you look at the screenshot you will see that the new 1tb cloned C HD is not marked "System" which means it doesn't have the ability to boot on it's own yet. It is using the H drive to boot.

If you want to remove the H drive, you will need to plug C into its cable or else set C as first HD to boot in BIOS setup. Then boot the Win7 DVD Repair console to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times until C becomes the System Active HD.

Before doing this I would follow the steps in BareFootKid's link to mark "Inactive" the HD's which are not needed to boot.

I had a brief post which said precisely the same thing before deleting it assuming it would be ignored (not part of the club!).

H is a dual boot running windows XP. I'm planning on formatting it and using it as another extra storage hard drive. But when i try to format it it won't let me
