Best regards

What exactly are you wanting to do?
Which version (Home, Pro, Ultimate, etc.) and which language Windows 7 install disc do you have?

Hi,

I want to install AVG antivirus software and it requires service pack 1 or higher. Windows 7 came preinstalled with the laptop Acer Aspire 5742G

Thanks

From what I can determine, the Acer Aspire 5742G series laptops were introduced in 2011 and came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
Windows 7 was introduced in October 2009, so Service Pack 1 should have been included.
What is the exact SNID number on your laptop?
Has Windows 7 without Service Pack 1 been re-installed in it?

Possibly

I upgraded to Windows 10, then used Acer recovery DVD's to roll back to windows 7, because the laptop got very slow.
How do I find the SNID number?

Every Acer has a SNID number and a serial number.
Those numbers will be on a sticker or label on the case.
Make sure to submit those numbers correctly and without typos.

It sounds like your recovery DVD kit contains Windows 7, but Service Pack 1 is not a part of it.
Right-click "Computer" and then left-click "Properties".
When the properties window appears, look at the "Windows edition" section.
Does it have "Service Pack 1" listed there?

Which version (Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, etc.) of Windows 7 did you re-install?

Those 2 numbers are "not found" at the Acer Aspire 5742G support site or at the Acer main support site.
You may have copied them incorrectly or they no longer exist in the Acer database.
Service & Support | Acer Official Site
Product Support | Acer United States

The oldest on-line reviews for the Acer Aspire 5742G laptop that I can find are in November 2010.
That means that model laptop was released for sale prior to that date.
Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 was not released until May 2011.
That means yours came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit without Service Pack 1.
Because you used its recovery DVD kit, you reverted it back to its original outdated condition.
You need to use the 64-bit link that SIW2 provided you so you can download and install Service Pack 1.

I right-clicked "computer" and left-clicked "properties" and SP 1 was not listed at the windows section. I also tried to download the links that SIW 2 suggested, but the links did not work.

Anyway, I very grateful to both of you for all your effort and sorry, flavallee, that it took me so long to understand how to cooperate in order to resolve the problem.

Thanks for confirming that "Service Pack 1" doesn't appear in the system properties window.
I guessed that it didn't, but we needed to be sure.

It appears Microsoft has removed its download links for the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Service Pack 1.

The download link at the Microsoft Update Catalog site that SIW2 provided you with works fine for me.
I was able to download the 903 MB size file for the 64-bit version of Service Pack 1.

Try this download link:

YES!, by both of your help I finally managed to install SP 1. Flavallee, the link you provided worked. I had to ignore many warnings during the installation prosess, but I ventured ahead and after about 1 hour SP1 was part windows 7. Thanks God and you both

SIW 2. I am sure your links would have worked too, but I were not bold enough at the beginning to download and install. My fault.
