UPS VA Rating

Another question just popped into my head...an UPS that I'm considering buying only has 4 battery outlets on it, and is rated @ 600 watts. would all of those watts be available from each of those 4 outlets, or is it like with some power supplies that have multiple rails, each having it's own individual portion of the total wattage available?

Unless specifically stated by the manufacturer, those 600 Watts are the max power you could draw from the 4 battery buffered ports combined. So if you need more you need a bigger model.
I only use them to safely power down Data server (Unix REALLY doesn't like to be shut off improperly). That means, the screen, modem router etc don't draw from the battery.

I understand that it is a combined limit, but would that limit be the same if all of those 600 watts were tapped by using only 1 outlet? It is not that I intend to do so, it is simply a question that crossed my mind and too often what crosses my mind comes out of my mouth...or in this case, through my fingers.

Usually, you can not draw the maximum power from one outlet. The maximum power output only applies when all outlets are switched.

If you think about what those types of UPS's ($45.00 and up) are designed for: Desktop equipment with ~200-300 Watt each. So if the Battery sustains 600W for 4 or 5 minutes you cold probably run 300W for 15, 20 minutes...that's the gain in buying bigger.
If you would plan on drawing 600x4= 2.4 KW you'd better spend a lil more on the UPS ;)
There's nothing wrong with you asking...that's how one learns.
My fav teacher always said the only dumb question is the one never asked

I would also remember that modern UPS's also protect against over under voltage plus power spikes etc, mine will go on backup early in the am when people are starting to get up and the power grid is getting hit with more draw and about 5 PM the same thing happens and i also had an issue with over-voltage as high as 134 volts and as low as 93 at some times during the day just another thing to consider with a UPS.
