Hey guys I was installing kali from a usb drive, when it was partitioning the drive it crashed... So I turned off my lenovo g570 4334 laptop, pulled out the usb drive and booted my laptop up normally..... It loaded the lenovo screen, with the options to access bios, then loaded a black screen with a blinking underscore.... I can't do anything at all except from the bios.... I've been searching for hours, Microsoft support for 2 hours straight... And now I just feel like crying.... Please help me!

How to run chkdsk and System File Checker (SFC) from the Recovery Console
  • Boot your Vista or Windows 7 installation DVD
  • When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter
  • At the "Install Windows" screen, click on Repair your computer at lower left
  • At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C:) and click Next
  • At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory
  • Run chkdsk first then SFC
  • If you did not note the drive letter of your boot disk, you can enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.
  • For chkdsk, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (use the letter from above if not C:).
  • For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above)
Let either run to completion undisturbed.

Vista or Windows 7:

If you don't have a install DVD, you can download a legal copy here:

Windows Vista Direct Download Links

Make sure you get the same version you have installed: 32 or 64 bit; Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate.

Looks like you have a defrective half ready Grub. If you made an image of your OS (or at least your system partition) before embarking into such a delicate operation, restore that image. If not, you may have to reinstall.

If I am right, which is only one of many possibilities, the fix is via an image or a reinstall of 7. Next time you want Linux, install it in virtual.

Of course you have to save your data - e.g. like this

If you have no installation disc, you can order one from the manufacturer or use this method

If you run Linux in virtual, it will use the connection that the host system has.

This question is answered in detail in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start along with everything possible that can be done to rescue your install, leading up to if necessary how to rescue your files and do a perfect reinstall. I just wrote this out for you above - did you not see it?

Once you've reinstalled the best way is here to Dual Boot - Windows 7 and Linux - Windows 7 Forums

Should I make a system repair disc using my other win7 64 bit laptop? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

Ztrucker, I don't have an installation disc, so I clicked on the win7 link and at the bottom of the page there are loads of Windows 7 home premium 64 bit downloads... Which one do I go for (e.g. media refresh, SP1)?

I'm certain this hasn't been caused by a virus or any malware.. It happened when partitioning another OS from a USB...

Yes you can burn a repair disk for the same bit-version on another Win7 PC. I gave you a link that has the Win7 disk for your licensed version provided for you to download and burn to disk with the tool to burn it with. It also has everything that can be done to start Win7. Did you see any of that? Have you started on the steps yet? We're waiting to answer questions or hear results.

What I'd do first is burn the Win7 disk or Repair disk, boot it to set the 100mb System Reserved (preferred if you have it) or C partition as Partition Marked Active, then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times
