When I'll try to connect some USB devices to my USB ports under Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, the error
message below will appear:
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize
it.
The device manager shows me an Unknown Device and it's recommended to "try reconnection the
device".
If anyone can help me with this I would be greatly appreciative. It's getting very frustrating.

Thanx,

Rameez

Hi rameez, Welcome to Sevenforums.

1. Run SFC /SCANNOW and chkdsk to check for any issues with file system.

2. lets refresh the USB Stack
Control Panel - Device Manager - click anywhere in the blank/white area - then VIEW - Show
Disabled Devices - look everywhere (except USB Controllers) for your "device" (may have
none or more than one) and Right Click on it - UNINSTALL.

Control Panel - Device Manager - USB Serial Controllers - RIGHT CLICK on EVERYTHING and
UNINSTALL all except the category itself - REBOOT - this refreshes the driver and the USB stack

3. Reinstall USB controllers
First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

a) Click "Start" button, type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press "Enter". Click “Continue” if necessary.
b) In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
c) Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

Keep us posted.

Also, the first test that you should perform is to try these devices in other computers to see if they work there or if they are truly malfunctioning.

Well, I had a problem that my laptop suddenly couldn't find drivers for usb 2.0 flash drives and following the directions above I deleted EVERYTHING under Universal Serial Bus controllers. After the reboot, I get an error that the driver for Universal Serial Bus Controller could not be found and no usb device is working, including the mouse that used to work before I deleted everything. The message for the Universal Serial Bus Controller is under 'Other Devices' and the USBC does no longer appear as a category in itself.

Any ideas on how to fix this or at least go back to the earlier state?

You may have uninstalled "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
The instructions are to uninstall everything under it, but not the the actual "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" entry.

Lets see if the chipset driver brings it back.

Well, I managed to resinstall the USB Controller and my mouse (microsoft Optical) works. So does my ipod when connected and also an old usb 1.0 flash disk.

On the other hand, I get an error that Microsoft Nano Trasceiver 2.0 driver is not found as well as my builtin Toshiba Webcam. I tried installing both of these drivers and they seem to work until I reboot and then they appear to be missing again.

I have 2xusb 2.0 flash drives and neither of them works though. The light turns on, the BIOS detects them, but they appear under Other Devices with an error code 28=no driver can be found. I have tried all ports, with & without a hub and still no luck. I remember that before Christmas I had managed to connect one of the two usbs in this laptop, so what changed since then? The same flash disks work on another computer with Win XP, so they're not damaged.

I'm at work right now, I only remember the Satellite L650 part, not sure about the rest. Will update when I get home.
It came with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium edition.

I applied the lastest Intel Chipset driver from Toshiba's site yesterday which changes the BIOS if that's what you mean, in order to re-install the USB Controller driver that was missing. Nothing else before that.

It seems it's a Toshiba Satellite L650-PSK1JE

The latest BIOS update for this model appears to be 14/02/12 v. 2.40 which is the one I have currently installed:(

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1

Oh, and the Toshiba diagnostic Tools seems to find my USB in perfect working order. Didn't see an option to test the camera though...

Ok, I update the INtel Chipset Driver, I uninstalled and failed to re-install the WebCam Application from Toshiba (I try to run it but nothing happens) and though I installed the Microsoft Nano Transceiver Driver "successfully", after the restart it still displays "driver not found". I have uninstalled any programs I could think of as unnecessary and still no luck.

I'm giving up:( I'll just try to restore to a previous point, so at least I can get my camera back (hopefully but not surely)

I might have done that? I installed pretty much anything I could find in Toshiba's site for my laptop and a couple from Intel & Microsoft as well. But I'll check again while I'm backing up my personal files in case the 'recovery' doesn't work as expected!

OK, after 3 days I have managed to bring my system back to the way it was mostly. That means the Toshiba Webcam and Nano Transceiver errors are gone. To do this, after installing and uninstalling, upgrading and downgrading, all I had to do was this: Choose Update Driver from the Device Manager Menu for the devices that were appearing with the yellow icon, select Browse my Computer for Software and write down this path: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository. Am I crazy to think that that's where Windows should look for drivers in the first place??? Obviously, it didn't:(

On the other hand I have these two mysteries still unsolved:
a. I did the same with my USB flash drive and it was correctly detected and loaded under Disk Drives. HOWEVER, I still can't see it in Windows Explorer and thus have no access to it. Ideas?
b. I have a bunch of no less than 5 Unknown Devices with a white-blue questionmark icon under Other Devices. I get the message that "This device is working properly" and that all 5 are USB Input Devices but drivers, names, etc are all unknown. I have nothing else on my USB drives right now except the USB fladh drive and the USB Mouse. Since everything seems to be working otherwise I'm not so worried about this but more curious as to why it's happening.

So, if you have any idea as to why my USB driver would be working and still the USB isn't appearing on WE, I'll be happy to hear it!
