Hi All,

I have trawled the internet for a solution but nothing offered has yet fixed my problem.

I have a Samsung external USB DVD writer that is on the compatibilty lists for Windows 7 64bit with no additional drivers required.

The problem I have is thus : I can format a blank DVD using Windows Explorer, I can create new folders and files on the DVD by right-clicking in Windows Explorer, but I cannot drag-and-drop or cut-/copy-and-paste any existing files from my HDD to the new DVD.

I have tried the upperfilters / lowerfilters fix and the bcdedit fix, but neither have worked.

I don't want to use a 3rd party program as doing it through Windows Explorer is so much quicker and I don't have another 3rd party app cluttering my machine...

Please could someone help me out?

The only thing I haven't tried yet is setting the drive-type in the registry to 0x00000001... it is currently 0x000053f7

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Martin

Can you actually write to a DVD?

For example, if you click on an ISO file does it get written to the DVD?

Yes, I know this test will cost you a DVD.

Can you create a System Repair Disc?

No, cannot write to DVD

@karlsnooks: Hi Karl, no, I cannot write any existing files to DVD. Whenever I actually try to drag or copy files to the DVD it just fails... the cursor changes to the "no entry" sign, the red circle with a line through it, suggesting it is not possible. I can however create folders and create files (.txt file in this case) with content, which are then stored on the disc, and I can subsequently delete those files and folders.

When I start with a new blank disc, Windows states that it needs formatting and gives me two options - Like a USB flash drive or With a CD/DVD player. When I choose the USB flash drive option, it does format it, but that is when I experience the issues above. When I choose the 'Withe a CD/DVD player' option a message immediately pops up withe the message 'Windows can't read the disc in drive E:\. Make sure the disc uses a format that Windows recognizes. If the disc in unformatted, you need to format it before using it.' :p Which is exactly what I am trying to do.

The DVD's are -R's and the drive definitely supports -R's. I can burn CD's without a problem...

Really confused - also, 3rd party applications do not allow burning to DVD, even though they state the following capabilities upon inspecting the drive:

CD-ROM, Read, -
CD-R, Read,Write
CD-RW, R,W
DVD-ROM, R,-
DVD-R, R,W
DVD-R DL, R,W
DVD-RW, R,W
DVD-RW DL, -, -
DVD-RAM, R,W
DVD+RW, R,W
DVD+RW DL, -, -
DVD+R, R,W
DVD+R DL, R,W

I am really confused!

Thanks for you posts and help thus far.
