I have taken the sound advice of not partitioning, but rather load linux via USB.
I have 2 brand new commercially produced Linux live CD's and they both freeze
I am told this could be result of ACPI.
Any thoughts or suggestions and thanks

I had problems with ACPI on my old Toshiba when installing Vista, try change ACPI to compatibility mode or something similar that fixed it for me.

Try to create a Multiboot ISO pendrive with your Linux Live CD ISOs, as enunciated in my post http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...ootable-flash-drive-iso-file.html#post1206484 and lemme know whether it helped you.

As for ACPI, I tried it only once and gave up since Windows 7 installed with ACPI set in bios was only freezing at random. I had no patience to research into it and waste my time.:)
I had a live CD on Mint 7 that I burned way back when. Inserted USB, then gparted. Partitioned drive, put the mint 7 in and got a clean bdual boot first time. This is a wireless unit, but mint is not on line so another issue, but I do appreciate your help.
