How long is a long time? Have you tried rebooting the router? Has it always taken a long time to connect or is this a recent development?

Description of Problem

Hi!

For the past couple of days whenever i'm trying to connect to the internet using my dongle it's taking a long time to connect. After connection there's no noticeable change in performance in terms of speed or duration of how long it's staying connected (was slow, is slow), but just that the connection itself is taking a long time. It takes 2-3 mins, maybe more, to connect.

I'm connecting not using the dialer given by the ISP (as that automatically opens the Yahoo! page using IE which i find irritating). I use the network and sharing center symbol at the bottom-right of the Windows 7 screen, where my ISP is listed.

though i'm not sure why exactly this is happening what i can tell you is that recently my Microsoft Security Essentials wasn't updating at all. I tried a lot of things but eventually one suggestion on MSE's website worked where it asked me to use MpCmdRun to remove all definitions and then restart the computer.

after i restarted and updated MSE, that's when i first noticed the problem. i thought it was a hardware issue, so i shut down the laptop, removed all usb's and even the battery. but the problem persisted even after i restarted. i then restored the laptop to the only restore point it was showing. after doing so, i could connect quickly but my MSE flashed red/amber warnings saying my computer was potentially unprotected.

i tried the entire cycle twice or thrice again (remove definitions, restart, restore...), but i eventually gave up after i had the same results. i decided that better security was preferable to faster connection time.

Now what i want to ask is whether this is a problem at all? I mean if i can spare 2-3 mins everytime i want to connect, then should i be worried? Or does this indicate some other major problem that i'm not being able to detect? if it's not anything major i would rather not spend too much time on it.

Apart from this i'm not facing any unusual problems with my PC. My laptop's around 5 years old so there are some issues but i don't want to disturb anything unless i absolutely have to. I use a Sony VAIO VGN-CS35GN.

some other info: I usually access the internet from my institute's network, which is quite secure. but recently, being outside, i've had to access via other means. could that also be a problem?

Let me know whether you need any other information.

Thanks in advance
SKG.

haven't timed it, but around 2-3 minutes, not less. not sure how i can reboot the router, this is a USB modem/dongle. it's a recent development. please check my description above.

Thanks.

Oh, I misunderstood. This is a cellular dongle, right? In that case, contact your ISP and ask for help.

Issue resolved automatically as of now.... not sure what went wrong.. or how it got corrected... but won't complain as long as it stays right!

Thanks
