USB Keyboard and Mouse not working after login

I have a Dell Inspiron 560s which is about 2 years old. The keyboard and mouse were working till 12 hours ago. This morning i realized that neither of them were working. The laser in the mouse and the lights on the keyboard stays on until the login process starts. The keyboard works in the BIOS. Once the screen says 'Starting Windows', the lights and the laser go off resulting in the mouse and the keyboard not working.
I thought going into safe mode and trying would make a difference - my efforts went in vain.
The only way I could turn off the computer during this process of trying was by turning of the ups or holding down the power button for about 5 seconds. I have currently stopped any further trials as I am afraid that switching off the computer like that would spoil the hard disk and I will lose all my data which is on it (I have lots of Pics and docs which are very important).
Any suggestions on what I should do in order to solve this problem? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance. :)

Try to plug them in into diffrent USB sockets. Sometimes USB sockets die and goto USB heaven. Try to switch around abit.

OR. Windows have for some reason dropped the USB drivers. Just google your motherboard and USB drives and reinstall them, might work aswell

I tried switching the USB ports which were being used by the keyboard and the mouse. There was no change in behaviour even after switching the ports.
For me to reinstall the drivers I need a mouse and a keyboard. I have the drivers ready in a CD but I cannot install it without any means of communicating with the computer!! ...... Any other solution to this mess?
