Solved USB Optical Mouse Stopped Working

My mouse stopped working yesterday and I haven't been able to get it going again. Some of the online advice I'm getting suggests fixes involving reinstalling USB controllers from the Device Manager. The trouble is I cannot do the boot log-in without the mouse. I'm assuming the keyboard is working. How do I accomplish log-in using only the keyboard?

John you don't say if this a wired or wireless mouse mate and have you got another you can try.

I am not quite sure what you mean by not being able to login without the mouse? Is that just clicking in where the password is?

This is a wired USB mouse but I get the same problem with another wired USB mouse and with a Bluetooth wireless mouse, all of which work on another PC. At the bootup login screen I need to move the cursor to select the account I want to login to and enter the password. Without the mouse I can't move the cursor.

But in any case I always do the drivers from themanufacturer mate as the Windows is ok but I find it not terribly reliable inwhat it finds.

Roughly how old is the motherboard?
I assume you tried the rest of the USB ports?
If you still fail to install or use a known good mouse you can use a different PC and follow this tutorial
and booting from it on the problematic PC in question to confirm whether it's really a software issue or a hardware fault (which I don't believe it is at the moment).

No probs YoYo it is a team effort as far as I am concerned. This board is a fairly recent one by the looks of it as I spec'd it on another thread this afternoon -RAMPAGE III EXTREME - ROG - ASUS these are the drivers and I was going to suggest redoing the USB ones at least - what do you think??

Yes, indeed it is .
I too believe it's a software issue, I simply suggested what I would do to as a way to quickly confirm
it is by booting into a live environment and testing the ports & mouse .

I've tried so many different things to solve this over the last few days that I really ended up confused as to what might have caused the original problem. I'm not even going to speculate as some of the things I think I remember trying seem to conflict with any explanation I might come up with. In any case I fixed the problem by booting from my install disk and doing a System Restore back to a date four days ago when I'd done my last Mirosoft update. That restored the mouse to functionality and I'm good to go. Yes, it probably was a software problem because the same mouse is working now.

Mate just keep an eye on the updates then I always have them set to inform me they are available and then pick or hide the ones I don't want so if this happens again then you will know the culprit.
