Solved USB ports not working - Code 39 error

Hi !

The USB ports (3) on Acer Aspire 5942G have stopped working.

This 5942G is a dual boot computer with Windows 7 / Ubuntu 12.04. The USB ports are working fine in Ubuntu 12.04 - so, it is not a hardware problem. I used the touchpad, instead of the USB mouse, in Windows 7 until now - I need to sync my iPhone - and hence need access to the USB ports.

Looking into the problem in the device manager I can see a :warn: on the USB Controller - "Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3B34" and "Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3B3C". I uninstalled the device drivers for both the above problems, re-started the machine and expected the drivers to be installed automatically. Still same problem. Again, I uninstalled the drivers and forced it to be installed (manually) from a fresh copy of the device drivers from Acer's website. Still same problem.

Triggered 'Troubleshoot' from Devices & Printers for the computer. 'Troubleshoot' identified the problem and applied the fix. But the device driver was not successfully installed. Looking at the driver status, I see the message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)". :banghead:

Any help / pointers to resolve the problem will be gratefully appreciated.

Hi there .. You seem to have tried every thing to resolve the issue .. Except maybe step 3 in the Link below ..

Hi !

I did see that post in About.com. However, aligning on the side of caution - it was specific to CD / DVD drives, though it does allude to other hardware as well - I did not try that fix. I shall try it today and post my reply.
