Solved USB Wifi driver won't install - 802.11n

I bought a (tiny) USB wifi dongle for my desktop PC, and have tried using the setup.exe file on the CD that came with it, and downloading a few drivers from the web (including Netcore SomethingOrOther and one in chinese) and none of them seem to install the driver.

It goes through the motions, asks for a restart of the computer, and once restarted there is no further activity or requests for me to do anything, and the driver isn't present. If I hover over the Realtek utility on the taskbar it says 'no RTL818x'.

The computer seems to register the dongle properly as when I first plugged it in it asked me to install the driver. The dongle itself has 802.11n stamped on it, but the packaging also says it's compatible with .11g and .11b - are these different drivers or is it all the same?

Any advice as to what I can try next?

DO not plug in dongle first

insert driver media(cd),run programme,>>> WAIT <<< for insert adapter now screen to appear, then carry on.

AS you have already run the programme you will have to start from scratch again
REMOVE the previously installed programme .

Have tried that, uninstalled everything and tried again, same situation.

I also uninstalled my existing Wifi driver in case it was conflicting, but no success.

Incidentally, when I plugged the existing wifi dongle back in, it asked for, searched and found the driver no problem. The 802.11n shows up in the Device Manager but the driver for it cannot be located, even though I point towards the folder where it's located. Could it be a faulty dongle?

I hadn't tried that link (looks like it's related to my existing dongle, not the new one?) but tried it just there and the 802.11n driver seems to be installed, so will see if I can get it connected to the wifi. Thanks,
