USB3 doesn't seem to be operational

My mobo specs are included in my profile. It's an Asus mobo. Just the other day I purchased a Seagate GoFlex Desk USB 3 External drive.

I have checked my settings in Device manager and it appears that I only have "high speed" performance.I have the latest NEC drivers from Asus. If I try to connect the drive to a USB 2 port, I get a message saying that the device would operate faster in Superspeed. I don't get such a balloon when I connect the drive to the blue USB3 port.

Any ideas on how to get my drive to run at USB3? I need to make an entire system backup and it's dang slow right now...averaging 35 MB/sec.

Have you tried it out? Pick a file of known size. Copy it to the drive connected to USB 3.0. Time how long it takes. Connect the drive to a USB 2.0 port. Copy the same file to the drive and time it. The USB 3.0 should transfer faster. If your USB 3.0 ports are only running at 2.0 speeds, it seems that you should get the same balloon warning about conecting it to a faster port. If you used the driver from the DVD for your MB, see if there is an updated driver on Asus website. The drivers are located Here.

yup. i tried it...i am running at about the same speed. I am using a folder that is over 9 GB in size and for both the USB3 and USB 2 plug, I am getting about 19 MB/sec. However, just checked and the speed has leveled off to 15 MB/sec. Redownloading the drivers from Asus was the first thing I did. I also checked my BIOS settings and USB 3 is enabled.

Try using the Renasas drivers, you can find them here; Download Asus Rampage III Black Edition Renesas USB3.0 Driver 2.0.32.0 WHQL Driver for Windows XP / Windows Vista / Windows XP X64 / Windows Vista64 / Windows 7 / Windows 7 x64 - Softpedia
They are for the wrong board but that should not make a difference

When you have these drivers installed Use ATTO; Download ATTO Disk Benchmark v2.34 | techPowerUp
to read the speed of your drive and post the results here.

If not, make sure that the NEC USB 3.0 Controller is enabled in the BIOS.

I would guess 7200 rpm

PS depending on what you copy to the drive you will get different speeds this is quite normal

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe NEC was bought out by Renasis. The newest drivers would be Renasis drivers.

Not sure if anyone is still reading this forum, I have tried for days to find a relevant forum that has been able to assist me. I have an Acer Aspire T660 desktop, about 5 years old, recently upgraded RAM and had to upgrade to the latest BIOS for it to work. I have also recently bought a Freecom USB3 3.5" 2tb external drive formatted to NTFS. I therefore purchased a USB3 PCI express card and installed.

Now, I can use USB2 devices in the PCI card and also use the 2tb Freecom in USB2 ports but when I plug it in to the USB3 card, Windows asks to format the drive (which as I have taken all the data off it, I have no issue) I then get another message: "Windows cannot format I". "Check to see that the disk & drive are connected properly, make sure the disk is not read only & then try again.

Checked all the above to no avail. I have also installed the latest driver for the USB Host. I have checked the BIOS and it says USB2 Enabled but no similar item for USB3. Acer were no help and advised they would not offer support as this was not their hardware...

Really didn't think it would be so difficult to buy a USB3 drive and try to utilise the speeds. The time I have wasted trying to get it working for USB3 is more than the time spent using the device at USB2 speeds... Any thoughts or ideas, I have exhausted all of my limited knowledge.

The only suggestions I can make is go to Freedoms website. They probably have an updated driver for windows 7. Plug it in, ignore windows wanting to format and go to disk management to see if it is found there. If so, format it or create a partition if there is not one there. If there is no partition on it, right click and select create simple volume. Follow the prompts and format it NTFS. Then see if it will work.
