My PC has just presented me with a completely black screen on Boot Up which has no error messages or text showing. The fans power up as do , I think , the DVD drive and there is a power light showing on the external drive . The usb printer also has power.

Obviously there could be several causes for this , including failure of the monitor, video cards , ...etc.

However , before I start digging into the case and , as I am having OS problems , I am assuming that this result of a completely black screen cannot be explained by an OS failure to boot !

Is that a reasonable assumption ?

If the problem was the failing to boot , I assume I would still get some DOSS-TYPE script appearing on the monitor .

Do you agree ?

I am assuming ... if it doesn't show the Bios screen.... you have problem with the hardware...or the very simple cable connecting the monitor.... check those first...

Thanks for the reply and also to Jimbo45.

I'm afraid I inadvertently posted twice on this subject within a very short time interval for which I apologise for any confusion or annoyance caused !

I will be checking connections ...etc but , since I have also been experiencing OS problems I would like to eliminate a failure of the OS as the sole reason for this black screen. I am presuming if the only failure here was the OS failing to boot that I would still be getting something showing on the monitor.

If you are able to boot to the desktop... then follow this Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions to post full set of files... this would help us sort out OS problem..

If you not even able to get the computer to show something on the display...
1. check monitors first....if you could get a spare use those... to confirm its not a prob with the graphic card
2. try cleaning the RAM... and reseating them..
3.. if its none of the above.... you will then need to check the motherboard visually for an physcial damages... like failed Capacitors etc...

Do these and let us know

Unfortunately I am unable to do this at the moment but if and when I can I will follow this advice.

I will also check all these items and post back asap

Seem to have sorted this monitor Black screen by merely re-seating the video card.
PC boots normally now .

Thanks very much for the help.
