"Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered"

I get that loads of times with an accompanying mini freeze which lasts anywhere from 2-4 seconds whenever I attempt to play Final Fantasy XIV. After multiple attempts at trying to fix these problems, I got to the conclusion that it may vary just a tiny bit according to driver version(for me at least). On the latest R331 I got these freezes around every 5 seconds which lasted for quite a few seconds. Upon advice to try R310 I got it in a wee bit more longer intervals, say 10-15, and lasted just a few. Upon my downgrade to the earliest version the NVIDIA archives had for my GPU, I got the freezes about once every 30secs - 1min, and they lasted for about 1-2 seconds, still freezes though no matter how short. I'm not entirely sure about these though but the R331 driver was definitely the worst, this old version I'm running is considerably more "calm". Since the driver versions only seem to affect how long the intervals of the freezes are and how long they last, is there any other way to solve these frequent "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered"?

I also had a very similar problem with the last 3 version of the driver, my freeze would also last from a few seconds to having to reboot, but only happened in windows not gaming (thank smeg), am now using 314.22 has been running great, BUT cannot now play BF4! as it wants the newer drivers.

Hi heatman,

Do look for GPU temps. Use MSI Afterburner to monitor the temps. Get the latest driver for the card. Remove the old drivers. Use DriverSweeper to remove old bits of the driver and then install the latest driver. Installing new drivers on top of other drivers can also cause the issue.
Run memtest over night to check for any errors on the memory.
