Hi. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated!

So, two weeks ago I bought a desktop PC from HP. I wiped the drive to get all their vapor ware off, installed my software and everything went fine. Windows Update recognized the hardware on my machine and downloaded and installed the appropriate drivers after the wipe.

Here's the problem. My girlfriend followed suit two weeks later and asked me to do the same thing for her. Our machines were slightly different but for the most part I expected a similar experience. Except it wasn't. This time Windows Update failed to recognize the Video Card after the wipe.

So now she has this nice video card sitting in her machine using a Standard VGA Adapter instead of the Radeon drivers it needs. No matter how many times I download and install the Catalyst software from ATI's site it doesn't catch. What am I doing wrong?

Do I need to flash the BIOS? Is that too drastic? If so, is there a place I can go with instructions on how to do it?

Thanks again for any help you can offer. Over the years I've done this fresh wipe routine for friends and family many times and this is the first time I've had this happen!

Have you tried getting the latest driver from AMD for your card and Windows 7 64 bit?

If not, please get it and try to install it.

No good. It just installs the Catalyst Software, not the driver.

Run the AMD software again and remove everything that AMD has installed.

Then go to device manager and under display adapters uninstall the driver that is shown.

Reboot your machine and then try installing the AMD software again.

Yeah I thought of that. Problem is Windows automatically reinstalls the generic VGA adapter driver upon reboot. Is there a way to disable that?

Thanks for the reply.

Try uninstalling the driver from Device Manager, then running your AMD software without a reboot? Also, what did you download from AMD, the complete install package for Windows 7 64 bit?

Won't make any difference what you do with the reference AMD drivers to get them to install as there is no support for that model card in it. Here is the complete list of cards supported in the latest 11.2,

It also doesn't help that it is an OEM only card,

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desk...d-6450/pages/amd-radeon-hd-6450-overview.aspx

From what I can see the card was only just released on early February which means it may have not made it into the 11.2, and support for it may be there when the 11.3 comes out. To make matters worse, HP doesn't even have a driver for it on their site yet.

Now with all that said if you're up to a bit of a challenge it is possible to add the support for your card to the above. If you haven't deleted it, look in C:\ for the ATI or AMD folder which will contain the extracted install files (if you did delete it just start the install from the downloaded exe and stop after it has extracted). Open the folder and navigate to,

C:\ATI\Support\11-2_vista64_win7_64_dd\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF

and locate the C7112962.inf file, and open it with Notepad. Next open Device Manager, locate your card, double click on it to open the properties for it and then click on the Details tab and scroll down to the Hardware IDs. Now go back to the above INF file and add this line to the bottom of the rest of the cards as above,

"AMD Radeon HD 6450 Graphics " = ati2mtag_Wrestler, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_XXXX

and change the XXXX with what it shows from Device Manager for the DEV ID. Save and close then try to install again. Hopefully that will get the driver to install.

I just looked and HP has absolutely no driver support for any device in that box. That is outrageous. Just when I think they can't get worse...

Since there is no BIOS downloads or updates available you should put that idea out of your mind.

But I would check to see if there is a setting in the BIOS to engage an on-board graphics chip. It is listed as one of the optional graphics in the specs and perhaps they don't bother with two different motherboards? (long shot).

As a worst case solution I would order the recovery disks for the machine from HP, if you did not burn a copy before wiping the drive. If you can't find a way to get the video drivers to work you could always restore and then go through the wonderfully painful job of deleting, uninstalling, and reconfiguring everything down to a near-clean system. Definitely not as good as a wipe and install, but in your case...

Since nothing else has worked I might try looking on the HP site for another (similar) system with a 6450 in it and see if they have HP drivers there and try them. Otherwise, contact HP and get some help directly.

Windows must install that standard VGA driver just to get you to the desktop. The question is why is Windows not detecting the card and installing it's standard WDDM 1.1 driver? That is why I am wondering if the 6450 is not being recognized at all.

Also of note: AMD has a "driver only" package on the "Individual Downloads" tab of their drivers page for that card. Have you tried that?

AMD has a "driver only" package on the "Individual Downloads" tab of their drivers page for that card.

Won't work for the same reason that the full Catalyst suite won't work, no support for that card in the driver. HP could at least have the driver they received from AMD up for download, then again they really don't like when people do like chadz70 did and wipe the HP Windows install with all its bloat and use an untouched Windows disk.

Was hoping the INF mod would work, but it's possible that it didn't due to the card just being too new (was only released to the OEM channel in early February). Hopefully AMD will include support for it in the next set of drivers (Catalyst 11.3) which should come out some time in the next week.

What do you think about the card not being recognized by Windows Stormy?

Same reason, the card is newer than the built in Windows driver. No different really than any other piece of hardware that doesn't have a native driver of some kind included with Windows.

If he can manage to extract the driver from the recovery partition of recovery disks, or support for it is added in the 11.3 (hopefully) then the driver should detect the card and install the driver.
