Hi there, I've been around here, but I haven't posted much.

I have Vista SP1 Ultimate installed onto a Laptop, and I'm trying to update to Windows 7, Ultimate, SP1. Both 32-bit. I have done this dozens of times and I thought I had seen all of the things that could go wrong, this is a new one on me. I have checked the hard drive for errors, and it's clean, and I also ran the Seagate Sea Tools on the HDD, and no errors were reported for the disk. The Vista installation has been inundated with viruses, which I cleaned all out using Malwarebytes and Eset, But I may have missed something.

Originally I thought the problem was with a small recovery partition that existed at the beginning of the drive, which I deleted. I expanded the Vista partition to the full size of the partition. I thought that in itself may have been a problem, because I always see a 100mb partition in any Windows 7 installation I make, and if I tried to install 7 into a partition that was fully used, it would fail. So I tried again after I made an area of 100mb of partitioned space at the start of the drive, which also created a 400mb unallocated space at the end of the Vista partition- Same error.

It goes through all of the upgrade steps,. then it starts to copy over the Windows 7 files. It processes the first two steps- It copies the Windows 7 installation files, then it collects info on the system, right? but it fails right at that spot, and I get a message that the upgrade was cancelled, and that Windows 7 could not set up the boot drive. But when I reboot, it actually starts the Setup again, but fails. I can get back into Vista at that point, and try again. It has failed about four times, and I've never seen an upgrade do this particular thing, anyone got any ideas? My update disk is bad? Or do I need to partition my HDD differently?

Xw must have a good reason for the upgrade.

He has been around the block a few times.

Another thing you might try is to the entries from HKLM\System\MountedDevices.

Do not delete the entry relating to your windows drive ( \DosDevices\C: )

See if the upgrade goes ok then.

Ok, it's almost back up - I'll check that out.

I have an AIO disk I've been using forever, it's not my machine so I need to do the in-place install. Thanks for the support!

Ok - NO errors on the HDD, I'll check out the log.

How should I format the partition, should I leave a 100mb partition at the end of the drive? or should I just extend it all the way?

If you are doing an upgrade, best leave the partitioning as it was with vista. Not sure it is a good idea to add an extra 100mb at this point. It should automatically update the boot critical files on whatever is the current system partition . Probably the vista drive in your case.

See how it goes after deleting the mounted devices entries ( except of course \dosdevices\c: )

I'm going to put that unallocated bit at the end of the drive, and see what happens. I had to get rid of that damned recovcery partition though, it wass right at the beginning of the drive. those things always mess me up.

You want me to delete everything there but the C drive, what about the CD rom?

There are a whole bunch of entries that look like:

\??\Volume(xxxxxxxxx...)

Delete those too?

They probably don't matter, unmounted volumes. I usually dump all of them except \dosdevices\c:

Oh damn! After I did that, it messed up the partition, I have to repair the boot on vista.

Now run setup to do the upgrade.

Ok, I deleted all but C and D, D was where the setup was mounted. If this fails, I'll just create a USB installer from my flash drive.

I used this install disk twice to install windows 7 versions, it's practically new. But it was a cheap verbatim dual layer disk, maybe the 2nd layer is toast.

That's just the thing it didn't rollback it simply canceled right in the middle, so I think my original assessment of bad media might be correct. I'm creating a USB drive now.

Use the ISO for your licensed version along with tool to write it to stick from steps 1 and 2 of Reinstall tutorial below. That tut will also give you a perfect install if you're inclined.

I've got an AIO that I use, I just buy the license after I get it installed. Actually the activation on the vista has failed and so I got it rearmed with only 13 days remaining.

I used to Rufus to create the USB, when I try to use the USB maker from Microsoft it wants me to choose which version of Windows 7 I want to install and I don't want to do that. I want to be able to choose from the OS list, I don't want to have it already chosen.

It's going in right now if it fails again it means that there's something wrong with the Image. Because last night after I got it to go a little bit farther I had cleaned the Disk. But as I said, it was cheap verbatim dual layer disc that I got from RadioShack, they used to sell their own storebrand there but suddenly the don't make them anymore and they sell these crappy verbatim discs which are crap. I've used this thing only twice to install operating systems and it worked perfectly both times so this pisses me off, that I only get two uses out of a dual layer DVD, imagine if I had backed up an important movie on it? I'm going to gather up all the Disks I burned, I need to bring it back and try to get a refund.

CRAP! After waiting 40 minutes just for the setup to start, it tells me the system has to be rebooted first! GRR! I didn't DO anything that required a reboot!

Grr- It added new drivers for the Cruzer Flash Drive, that's what it was.

Ok it's going in from the USB drive, if this fails, I'll post the Disk Manager image. I left 300mb unallocated at the end of the drive, there are no other partitions.

It failed again, grr. I'll have to get that disk image from the link. Right now, I'm going to try an In-Place re-install of Vista, there were so many viruses in here, maybe some system files were corrupted, I saw a bunch that "Failed Audit" so maybe they were replaced with Virus Versions.

What makes this tiresome is that it takes SO long to set up an install, 45 minutes while checking compatibility. I wish there were a way to skip over that.
