Solved Vista to 7 Upgrade failing right before 1st reboot

Sorry, didn't see Page 3 heh. Nope, it failed from the USB stick! It has to me my AIO image then, I';ll grab that image from the link someone posted,

It just takes SO long in between failed attempts to set up another install, it's possible that the Vista image is corrupted as well, I'm going to try an In Place Vista install now. I'll post back results, thanks for all of your help.

(Edit) Digital River is a bust, I need Ultimate Edition SP1, they don't have it. I have some other SP1 images with only Ultimate, I'll try one of those.

Nope, it's listed but no ISO is available.

I suspect something is really fooked with this vista install. Does vista use "recboot" to fix the boot sector? Any installer I use fails, even vista. I remember vista used to have a Grub loader, and that's missing here. It can't write to the boot loader, so it's failing all attempts at in place install.

Run a few Startup Repairs to check over the boot files and possibly repair.

Problem is, if the Active flag has moved or disappeared it won't repair until its replanted. So if we could see a snapshot of Partition Wizard boot CD map and listings we could at least spot if its awry.

Try writing the code first, see if that helps.

Boot up win 7 install media. open cmd prompt and type :

bcdboot x:\windows

bootsect /nt60 all /mbr

Then see if it will behave.

You don't nned an ultimate iso. They are all the same.

All editions contain all images. Install.wim is identical no matter what they call it.

Ok, I'm running a vista startup repair right now, it's taking a long time.

I use the Win 7 disk for the command?

I can't show you the partition map now, but I can tell you; it's flagged system/boot/active like it is supposed to be.

I may have a root kit so I'll check for that after it finishes repairing, if it ever finishes, this is the slowest laptop ever. That's why I wanted 7 in it.

Maybe I'll try windows 8, that does not used the same bizarre boot sector vishshite and 7 use.

It's important to first disinfect a possibly infected OS since it may not repair or do anything else until its clean.

Be sure to try the commands Si gave you to apply the bootable code in case Startup Repair won't.

I've got DART on this install disk, can that be used to help?

I knew that about the vista disk, I thought 7 was like that too, but I don't think it is.

If you can get into Safe Mode use Malwarebytes.

If not use two of the bootable AV scans in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start,
then the SFC command, boot writing command you were given, followed by Startup Repair.

This does everything you can do to assure disinfection, OS integrity, boot is in order.

After you select Install, the next windows asks for the product key. DO NOT enter key, just click next. It will then ask which edition you want to install. You can choose any of them.

Back to the point:


Run the bcdboot and bootsect commands from booted windows 7 media. With luck, that will write all the windows 7 boot files onto the hard drive.

Letter x is so it uses boot files from ramdisk.

I used malware bytes, that's what found the 2k virus bodies.

I ran the commands from the DART disk, it's booting to vishshite now.

I'll post the disk manager image, I have to run gmer and tdsskiller.. Once it finishes booting 3 hours from now that is.

I found no root kits or other active virii, I could not use bcdboot x:/windows, it could not find any boot sectors there. Did you mean Bcdedit? I was able to run bcdboot c:/windows and that worked, as did the second command- think I ruined the command by not running "x" first? My bad, I was assuming where x=My boot drive

I'm running an SFC /SCANNOW at this point. Then I'll try installing again, I don't know if those commands were successful.

That returned NO errors, I'm just deleting the folders left by seven install attempts, then I'll try it again.

I tried both the windows 7 install dick as well as the windows 8 DART disk, which had support for all previous OSes. I got the error for "x" on both of those.

Rofl - in the time I've done all this on windows vistpoodoo, I

1) restored my iPad mini to iOS 7.1.1 from 7.1.2, which sucked, so I went back one- they were still signing 7.1.1 (would it not be great if Microsoft pulled this same aptticket/boot rom cack? So none of us would be even able to reinstall windows vista/7/8 if out mamas lives depended on it).

2) I restored my last (huge) iPad backup from iTunes, 100 plus apps+music and pix,

3) I jailbroke my iPad again with Pangu 1.1

4) I restored all of my tweaks, and I'm posting on my iPad NOW, using the iOS version of the windows 7/8 forums app. It's too bad it won't be updated any more

I'll give that a shot if this fails.

Maybe I'll even try to install Windows 8 hey? Haha. I've never failed to upgrade anything to that!

At least it wasn't a total waste of a day, I got my iPad running great again. I use OS Experience, which allows multiple windows on an apple device. It's cool when I use my BT Mouse and Keyboard, except that I have to install an extra BT Stack for it to work heh.

Ok, this install has just gotten to the "deth-step", step 2, after which it will either continue or I will take a hammer to his hard drive and give him one of mine.

Now this sucks, the vista screensaver keeps on activating wtf? ! :/
