In VirtualBox, you can specify where to put the VM when you are creating the virtual disk. It will default to your user folder on the C: drive but you can put it on any drive you like (even an external).



You can also move an existing VM to another drive/folder but it's a little trickier. Find the VM in your user folder, then move it's entire folder to the drive/folder you want it to be in. After that, you need to remove the VM from the VirtualBox Manager console and then create it again. This time however, instead of creating a new virtual disk, you tell it to use an existing disk and point it to the location you moved the VM to.

I skipped the product key part but and Windows 10 installed as normal. I can't change the desktop (personalize) customization because it's not activated. I'm right clicking on the desktop and clicking "personalize". I was able to before now it won't let me.

I did join the insider program. I went to the insider website and found info on activating a preview build. I had to go into "Updates & Security" in Windows 10, I started Oracle VB, left Windows 10 open (while I read how to do activation) and Windows 10 eventually asked me to enter my login info to get updates.

It updates but still will not activate. Did Microsoft disable the preview builds now that Windows 10 is available retail?

If you just created an account to use did you get any emails from the insiders program/ Gabe... to take a tour or anything else to confirm your membership ?

I found a post that says since October 1st you must use an activated Win 7 or Win 8 license to be able to activate Win 10 for free.

Until October 1st, you could have installed and activated a Windows 10 Insider Preview build on the new motherboard. After October 1st, you must activate Windows 7 or 8 on that new motherboard in order to be able to activate a Windows 10 install for free. Your old motherboard might still activate Windows 10 if you reinstalled it, but you said it has issues.

I have one or two Windows keys that I can use to activate it. One copy is on my MacBook Air (using BootCamp). I'll be removing 7 from that today. The other copy was on my Acer Netbook, uninstalled it using "slmgr.vbs /upk". Got rid of the netbook.

If I use one of those keys, will I still be able to install the copy of 7 on another computer or will the key be tied to Windows 10 from now on?

If the key(s) you want to use are OEM keys, they can NOT be transferred to a different PC.
If a key is a RETAIL key, it can be transferred.

Are your keys OEM or RETAIL licenses ?

No, you can not use the W10 free upgrade offer and use the "W7 upgraded" license on any device at the same time you are using the "W10 free upgrade" OS/license.
The true COST of the free W10 upgrade offer is giving up a legitimate W7 or W8.x license.

You can revert back to the original W7 device/OS/license, if W10 doesn't work well for you, and you want to go back to W7.

can't I install the OEM copy on a different PC (or use the key to activate 10)?

I don't think you can do that according to the license agreement (EULA).
Here is a quote from the tutorial you used.

An OEM product key number is permanently tied to the motherboard of the computer it was first activated on. It can only be used to activate Windows on the exact same computer that it was first activated on.

A retail product key number can be used to activate Windows on any computer as long as the product key has been removed from any other computer first.

It may work for a while, but it may get blacklisted someday.

So if I deactivate/uninstall an OEM copy of Windows, the disc/product key is no longer useful? Should I toss them or keep the disc for whatever reason?

As long as the oem is reinstall on the same mother board it's still good.
