When I download a specific wallpaper image the file target seems to be directed by the OS instead of the download dir I have set with the browser. Is there a way to interrupt this process and have it behave according to my directions or is this process out of (my) control? Rather than have to move files from Background to MyDir it would just be simpler if they landed in MyDir at the outset.

So when I get around to downloading moving images for the screensaver will I have to again go through similar hoops or will the new downloads appear in the drop down automatically?

Glad you found it, when you download something instead of applying it right away, save it to a folder, then you know where it is and it's easier to set as a wall or whatever.

I always download to my computer by clicking save and then direct it to the appropriate folder.

I don't know about moving images as I don't use them.

But, using still images as an example:

You can add new images to your wallpaper folder at any time, but they will NOT go into the rotation until you revisit personalize/desktop background, put a checkmark beside the new pictures, and save your changes.

I'd advise you to use TIFF or BMP images to keep the quality up during any photo editing/processing you might do (cropping, color alteration, contrast changes, etc). If you use jpeg, you will start to see a noticeable decline in quality if you edit and resave several times.

If you are particularly concerned with how the wallpapers look and fill the screen, you will probably want to resize them as follows:

Make the picture size is the same width as your screen resolution, allowing for the space used by your taskbar (which is usually at screen bottom).

Example:

My screen resolution is 800 x 640, with taskbar at the bottom.

Allowing for the taskbar, the usable dimensions are 800 x 612. The taskbar occupies 28 vertical pixels on my screen (640 minus 28 is 612). You find this out by cropping experiments.

Therefore, I manually resize/recrop my wallpapers to 800 x 612. A pixel too large is better than a pixel too small (801 x 613 is preferable to 799 x 611).

You don't have to resize, but if you don't you will sooner or later run into instances of improper wallpaper borders, duplication of part of an image, stretching or squeezing to an unnatural aspect ratio, etc-----depending on the choice you make in the "picture position" dropdown (stretch, tile, etc). Do some experimentation with that choice.

Sorry for the delay but I was continually missing the last step with the paperclip--thanks Brink!

I hope the image didn't lose too much being ported from a larger BMP to a much smaller jpg.
