Want to share folders between 2 machines on a home network

I want to share folders between 2 machines on a home network.

I have been through all the checks for Homegroup; both machines are connected to the same Workgroup, with the same file-sharing permissions on a wired Home Network, running through the same router with no other apparent issues. Both computers are visible on the network.

One machine indicates it can join has a Homegroup created on the other machine, but the Homegroup password is not available on that machine! (The Troubleshooter is useless.)

When I try to access a shared folder on machine 2 from machine 1, I get a permissions error. Both machines are set to not require password access.

So I either have to fix the Homegroup (and I have tried many times) or find another way to share folders.

Homegroup has always been a pain get rid of it disable ipv6 and just use workgroup. What folders are you sharing the most common mistake is to share a folder in your profile which will have permissions set to deny. If you try on local pc to view a folder in a profile you will get access denied even if your admin.

What people forget is they set the share but thats only part of it then NTFS permission kick in and they must be set or yours going nowhere

I've never had any real issues with home groups
Every once in a while I have to leave and reenter but that is a pretty easy fix but is somewhat annoying
Work group is an option

I have always had problems with Homegroups too. Especially with mixed wired and wireless connections, but in this case it just 2 wired machines, each with one admin/user. Somehow the machine with the fresh install seems to find its own homegroup but not a password, so there is no way to join it.

Anyway, I just want to share a few folders but when I set them to share my options are with the Homegroup (which obviously doesn't work) or with specific people - and then the other machine doesn't appear in the selection list. If I try to access via the File Explorer menu (where the shares are visible), I get permission errors: request for a network password when there is none. Frustrating.

I have been through that tutorial on both computers. Both are on the same workgroup and Home network. The computer that says it has the homegroup cannot report its password, so the other computer can't join.

My network doesn't run over the internet - its LAN through a router in the same room.

Still the main hardware is the router that a home group would use,

I have a near new Netgear router (separate ISP modem) that does not report any issues and is otherwise faultless, so likely not the cause. All I can come up with is there is some old profile attached in one of the machines.
