Wants to save data from my external G:\ from Windows 7

Hi there.
Just now, I've wanted to check the content of my G:\ drive that is my external 320GB. Upon wanting to access it, Windows gave an error. So, I disconnected and reconnected the drive, and now, he refuses to show me the file and absolutely wants to format it like the old floppies. At the moment, I'm doing a CHKDSK on it (CHKDSK G: \F \R).

If in the worst case, if Windows 7 really really doesn't want to read my data on my external 320GB, I would like to recover data from it. There's a lot of stuff I would LOVE to save from there such like sound effects and videos.

Note : the external feeds electricity from USB and is connected on a hub.

If your MFT is corrupted, the chkdsk may not really help. You may try to repair the MFT from the mirror with TestDisk.
Another option is to try to pull the data with a Linux program - e.g. this one. But sometimes the MFT and the MFT mirror are corrupted. Then it is going to be difficult.

You can try a low-level file recovery program (don't know the recent flavors, but the working principle is that is scans the raw data on your HDD for traces of file tables and is sometimes able to recover a % of your files.) However, what you describe sounds more like a hardware problem, if you manage to recover any data, you'd be wise to move it to a new HDD (assuming the data is more valuable than a new HDD, that is)

Good news! CHKDSK has been able to recoever everything! And even the broken MFT and MFT mirrors!

Very good. Sometimes you can be lucky. Must have been a bad sector.

I have had the same problem several times, the solution was to reboot each time and the drive was there and ready to use again

So now the inevitable question:

You do regular backups, right?

Very important part of your data management plan.

If you don't, then now is the time to start. Unless, of coarse, you don't mind loosing you files and data.

There are several free programs that are very good.
