Watch Out For Lenovo Laptops

I just want to post a warning here from my own experience about Lenovo laptops, I originally got one for Christmas in 2012 and about 4 months after getting it, I had to take it to Geek Squad at Best Buy so they could fix the Hard Drive and Motherboard, later on in the year I had an issue with Lenovo software on my computer and then had to go about spending $60 to order Recovery Disks to fix that issue and then about 6-7 months later I was starting to have problems with the charger wanting to go out and not work and that cost me $60 to buy a universal charger for it and shortly after buying a new charger I was starting to have issues with the graphics card wanting to crash every hour or so and afterwards I finally just said to hell with it and ordered a new laptop and gave this one to a friend and earlier this week he came to me and asked me to help him fix it for him because he lost everything on it and I told him I would just put a fresh install of Windows on it and as I started to install Windows 7 it just started shutting off on its own and then told him to just buy a new laptop because that was just something that couldn't be fixed, so I figured I would just give everyone that warning about Lenovo computers, they don't last long and they always end up with problems

hello every maker can have a bad one that gets to the customer. i am sure lenovo do make some great laptops. everyone will have their own opinions on what brand they like best.

Lenovo laptops are very popular where I am at the moment (Far East) because they have a good build quality and decent spec for a reasonable price, Personally I was quite impressed with the one's I have had to work on not seen a hardware failure in any yet the problems have all been due to lets say user error...

Like anything else if you get a bad one then everything seems to fail bit by bit, same as cars really.

I've had excellent luck with Lenovo Notebooks so far. Some were issued with malware but I've managed to miss those.

Lenovo's were voted tops by computer repairmen - not because they made them money, but for their layout and workability. There are three layers of problems: unit, model, and manufacturer. Any unit can be a lemon, from the hard drive to the processor. Some models are just plain bad. And then you might get a bad manufacturer, but that's pretty rare among the big ones.

The only reason why I got the computer in the first place was because the specs were good, it had an AMD-A6 processor that ran at 2.7GHz, it had a 500GB Hard Drive and 4GB of memory originally, but I had no clue that I was going to have as many problems with the unit as I did and for some reason I kept getting malware, even though I had ant-virus software installed, it just went right through my virus software and all of my stuff ended up getting deleted multiple times

I have a lot of machines come through here. There are obvious parameters you can use to determine performance - cpu power, hard drive rpm, interface speed and age, amount of RAM, etc. But still there is variation that can't be explained. I have a Toshiba netbook in front of me with a standard configuration, plenty of miles on the odometer, and the thing flies. One reason is that the processors vary quite a bit despite their labeling. Intel even makes the processors first, then grades them afterward for speed because it is so unpredictable.

When you get into malware, you've pretty much stepped away from the hardware issue into things beyond the manufacture's domain. Yes, there are some things they can do, particularly at the BIOS level, but I'm reasonably sure they all cover at least the basics.

I've basically found that all the manufacturers have good and bad models. Some are more consistent than others.

Most infection are cause by the user and or the Security Programs selected.

I know of no Security program that is 100% perfect all the time. If they ever come up with one we will all be using it.

More like the lack of Security Programs or the use of inadequate ones but, otherwise, I agree.

Exactly, which is why most of us use an arsenal of them.

..If they ever come up with one we will all be using it.

Maybe the OP had one of the Lenovo machines that came with the pre-installed malware Superfish

If a manufacturer makes poor judgements on what bloatware to install, then that brand of computers is more likely to get infections than other brands. Specific to Lenovo: Microsoft, Lenovo scramble to protect users from Superfish security flaw - CBS News

Are you saying that every brand of computers has the exact same level of security flaws in their bloatware?


And then there was Lenovo's BIOS stunt:

In other words, this design flaw makes it possible for cybercriminals to gain administrator-level control over a computer.

Superfish wasn't too bad since it wasn't too hard to remove. Also, only a limited number of models had it installed. The latest FUBAR was the rootkitted crap/adware they installed; that isn't so easy to get rid of. You'd think Lenovo would have learned its lesson the first time around, which is a shame since they make otherwise excellent hardware.

One has the choice to keep the pre-installed crap or replace it.
Many pre-built systems have a bunch of things I wouldn't recommend. That doesn't mean the computer is bad. It means it has junk installed from the factory and should be investigated by the new owner and a decision made whether to keep them or not. To me that is part of being a computer user/owner.
I do agree that the manufacture should do a better job on choosing what crapware comes with their computer system. A better way would be no crapware. I don't think we will see that happen.

Note:
My opinion is from the stand point of someone who has never owned a computer that has had anything install, including a operating system. I know that everybody can't or don't want to build their own computers. But one still has the duty to make sure what is on their system from the factory is what they want and need. Owning a computer comes with responsibilities.

Now for a better understanding of my opinion.
Did Lenove make a mistake installing that piece of crapware? Absolutely they made a mistake.
