Websites time out

On Thursday, I was sorting out my backup sets for Norton, and I started backing up. Everyone in my household was complaining that the connection was bad, so I stopped backing up. But, nothing's changed, though everyone who are on wireless is getting a great signal, websites take for ever to load. This hasn't happened before, I'm the only one who is getting websites to appear as fast, but I have the router and modem in my room and I'm running off an ethernet cable. Anyone have any ideas?

Well since you have multiple computers in the house. I take it that you are using a wireless router.

Have you tried to just do a hard reset on the router to clear up any misunderstandings.

Yes, I have a wireless router but I'm connected to it wired.
How would one hard reset a router?

There are two ways to do it... You can do it software base through the WebUI under the Admin TAB....

or you can hold the RESET button down in the back of the router for at least 10 seconds.

I don't see a reset button on the back, but there is as button on the front like this:

It's tough to say from that picture. The button looks like it has something to do with wireless or a lock of some sort?
Might get an answer quicker with make/model #...

It's a NETGEAR WNR2000 v1

That button is WPS, or Wifi Protected Setup, basically you hold it down so that you don't have to type a wireless password in.

The reset button should look like a hole in the back of the router, with a button at the bottom. You will normally have to put a pen or something in to press it. They aren't always labelled but normally, they are near the power button.

No, that's a reboot. A Factory Reset, is completely different, and can only be done by either pressing the reset button for more than 10 seconds, or in some cases flashing the firmware.

Well, I done a speed test and I get around the same results, but I'll have to wait till everyone tries it to see if the issue has resolved.

I thought it may be the router because you are having more than one computer doing it.. since you are plugged in directly... It might be a wireless setting.... you know process by elimination.

Actually, what would be really helpful, if the problem hasn't gone away, is to know how many wireless clients are trying to connect at the same time, and how fast your internet is.

Also, is there any pattern to the sort of traffic that is happening when the problems start, IE, is anyone doing heavy downloading etc.?

Just a theory, but I think I may know what's going on here.

If it helps, I have a bandwidth of 300+MB/s, a download speed of 20 MB/s and upload of roughly 1MB/s (This is a result of packets from speedtest.net and sending from Manchester, UK)

OK, Everyone has tried the internet...and it seems to have gotten a little bit better. Think there might be anything else I can tweak?

Sorry for triple posting, but people in my household are still suffering the problem. It's gotten a little better, though.

As acurasd said, we need to do this by process of elimination,

Its a PITA, but it's the most effective solution.

Next, I would try (where possible) connection as many machines as possible wired, obviously this isn't a long term solution, but if we can eliminate whether it only happens wirelessly, then we are a step closer to solving the problem.
