what are the default windows update settings

So a week or two I turned off windows update when reinstalling nvidia drivers. Im sure I put it back to normal, but what exactly are the deafult settings? Today I had a notification saying windows will install updates as scheduled, which I havent really seen before, so im guessing I may have miscondigured the settings.

Go to Start Menu and type = Update = Near the top you will see = Windows Update = Click on that and it takes you to where you can make changes. Click on = Change Settings =. It should be = Install Updates Automatically = and there are four boxes at the bottom. I have the first three checked. The one on the bottom is not necessary.

I set windows update to check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them. I don`t won`t my pc doing anything without my knowledge. Plus the fact that there are some updates you do not need.

There are very few updates 'you don't need' - almost all of those are in the 'optional update' listing, and can be hidden and ignored (at least until they are again updated - Bing desktop and toolbar being prime examples).
There are a few which you may choose not to install, because of either hardware or software incompatibility, but generally it's best to install ALL security updates and 95% of other updates.
