What don't you like about Windows 7?

Aside, I really really need MS to allow a classic mode for networking, so that we can access the network settings like in XP. This automated Home center just p$$$ me off because I need it to be completely manually controlled for my work! I have to keep disabling and re-enabling the nic for it to reset properly. I know it can be done through the monotonous process, but I can't afford the time wasted in that slow a$$ networking center!
Use Work instead of Home for the networking type. On the right side of the network name, Connections is a link to open that adapter's status, then you can open the advance properties there with the properties button.

LOL you do realize most BSOD's are caused by either faulty memory chips, or simply memory that is not best suited for your motherboard right?

Sorry I can't agree with you on this one. 80% of all the BSOD's I've encountered were driver compatibility or software related and NOT hardware (over the past 10 years as a PC tech). Tho still not necessarily a fault of the OS. BSOD is just an error message, albeit an ugly, malformed and/or twisted one.

I have yet to see a BSOD from Windows 7

Hmmm

The only BSOD I've EVER seen in 13 years of using windows (95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista & 7) was because of a mouse driver that was not compatible with SP2 for XP. When the mouse was plugged in there was a BSOD if the driver was installed after SP2. If you installed the driver before you had SP2 you could install SP2 with no problems.

I guess that's a driver and a hardware issue. What I encounter for more often are BLACK screens of death: The OS wouldn't boot because of a memory issue or something that wasn't installed/got deleted.

Win 7 IS quite large. Perhaps an option in setup for minimalists could be forthcoming, or a more customizable install for the advanced to allow unused features to never be installed, rather than just disabled. This would free up HD space. Big Brother for instance. I don't like being bothered by the OS when I want to do something either. (My firewall's no good?)

For the person who could not edit multiple music files, Multiple music files CAN be tagged at the same time Select several music files, and click on a field you want to change at the bottom of the screen. If the fields don't show up, click show more details.
My problem is contributing artists: is not the same as Artist:. That is a major field I find myself editing all the time; and the one music players look for to display the artist. I cannot find a way to customize the list of fields I can edit. Anyone solve this one? Help files didn't.

Windows 7 has problems too :-(

Errrr... you asked;

The Windows explorer settings not remembered issues (size, icon format, folder views etc) & having to buy a third party app to do what Windows used to do itself.

Compatability problems with some major applications, like adobe creative suite.

The usual lack of drivers, which hopefully will only be short term;

Problems with wireless networking (public vs private)

Inability to set shell folders to network locations without using offline files and/or indexing. (I have a server here and homegroups, libraries, indexing and offline files are just a waste of resources for us)

Being forced to use Windows Live software; removal of Windows mail;

Missing functionaility in Windows Movie Maker; Time to go elsewhere

Taskbar (yuk!). Thank god we can get quicklaunch back

Im using it for a week now win7 64bit (6.1.7600) setup 85 application in it, and find no fault to report(First time ever) I tryed to mess things up but was repair it self on reboot.
For AV using the free Microsoft Security Essentials together with AVG Identety Protection that cost me $26

What's wrong with Windows 7?

1.Microsoft has stripped Windows 7 of familiar built-in applications, such as email, photo organizing, address book, calendar and video-editing programs.

2.Microsoft includes an Easy Transfer wizard to help with this, but it moves only personal files, not programs

3.I hate Microsoft:((

Vista, and Windows 7
OS
Vista, and Windows 7
1.Microsoft has stripped Windows 7 of familiar built-in applications, such as email, photo organizing, address book, calendar and video-editing programs.

The reason why Microsoft excluded those programs from Windows 7 was to allow for a seperate package, Windows Live Essentials, to be downloaded as per the users requirements. Also, by keeping them seperate from the OS, it allows for them to be updtated more regularly. Or at least, that's the official story.

I personally believe Microsoft did this to avoid possible pending anti-trust lawsuits being filed against them. Look at the troubles Microsoft has had over Internet Explorer ever since it was bundle with Windows 98!

2.Microsoft includes an Easy Transfer wizard to help with this, but it moves only personal files, not programs

Windows Easy Transfer has NEVER been able to transfer programs, for several reasons:
  1. You should already have the original install media, so it's not necessary to transfer them in this fashion
  2. Even if it was possible to do, it would never work 100% because of the myriad files and registry settings.
  3. Can you imagine the myriad lawsuits that would be brought against Microsoft by anti-piracy agencies should they have the ability to transfer programs?
3.I hate Microsoft:((

Please elaborate? That very remark actually invalidates your first two points, as it highlights your bias towards Microsoft. I would hazard a guess that if Microsoft kept those programs in Windows, then you would likely also be complaining about bloat over the inclusion of programs that don't get used?

Oh well, I suppose not everyone can be kept happy.

Hmm I actually hardly noticed that. I HATE all of those programs and I never use them, ever.

I just use web-email because there's really no point in using a mail client.

I professional tools like Adobe Bridge and Lightroom for photo organization.

I don't use a calendar but if I want to see a date I just click on the time in the corner.

I edit videos with professional programs like Premier, After Effects and Final Cut Pro. Windows' video editor has always been a massive joke.

But if you want all of those they're still available; just as a separate package.

The things some people choose to complain about really amaze me. I really don't see what the big deal is about having to separately download a collection of apps that used be included with the OS. This solution makes people who don't want those apps on their system happy and those who do want them can still download them for free. What's not to like about this state of affairs?

Thank you! :D

I am one of those people who want NONE of those stupid apps. Do you know how annoying it is to click on a mailto link accidentally and have to wait for outlook express to start up for no apparent reason because I don't use it?

If anything I wish they would have streamlined windows even MORE and made everything that isn't absolutely required to operate the OS optional. I would have liked a more advanced installation menu that allows me to choose specific components to install or not to install.

....Back we go to perhaps including Mail, and other options on the install disks and allowing the end user to make the decision. Personaly, I don't mind downloading free apps if I need them. I can however see a couple of reasons people would want them on the install disks.
First, yes... believe it or not, there are a lot of people who cannot get high speed internet. DSL is not available everywhere (Yet), and Unreliable SAT internet is priced out of range of a large population segment. ....and don't get me started on the "Fair Share" (In my oppinion) ripoff. This makes downloading large packages not only a pain a pain, it also (With some ISP "Timeouts", and other dialup restrictions/problems) is quite impossible for some.
Second, I would venture to bet, that there would be another large segment of users that would not even know the package is available.

Note: I do use a mail client. It's a personal pref.

Libraries, I like the idea of them but I guess I don't really know how to use them properly, also the speed of them when trying to view what's in them is kind of slow. I have a folder of movies added to my "Video" library and it takes ages to display them, I know they are on a external hard disk but when viewing the folder normally it just diplays them straight away. Other than that I love my 7.

I like Win7 a lot but my main problem with it is related to support for older hardware.

In particular my Ati X1800XL AIW graphics card (using RC the TV tuner and extended desktop just would not work no matter which drivers I installed) and my old yet perfectly good and reliable Logitech Formula Force steering wheel (also doesn't work due to lack of W7 drivers).

Be it the fault of their manufacturers or MS for not providing the drivers - the culprit makes no difference to me in the end - I am disappointed that if I fork out money for W7 I will also have to spend more money on replacing these 2 perfectly good and functional pieces of kit... and add to the pile of techno junk already out there.

caps at about 650kb down, 50kb up . Gigabit local network.
It's not the size of the install disks that seems to have people up in arms, it's the size of the installed OS. Yes, Some want the kitchen sink thrown in; but others want options not to install some things (Unused apps or functions) on their hard drives, rather than just disable them.
This not only would reduce the footprint on the hard drive, it could also reduce the size of the registry, and perhaps memory requirments.

More flexable install options would also help advanced users taylor the OS for the way they use it, and omit the chaff.

Slow Internet is (Barely) better than no Internet, which for some people are the only two options. I know! I was there! It was horrid! All the more reason to have an OS that can do other things.
