What don't you like about Windows 7?

Status
Not open for further replies.
So far i dont like what they have done to:

  • still no easy way to make the user folder point to a different drive or partition

Stew, I agree with what you say, however, I have discovered this. Perhaps it will help to alleviate some of your frustrations.

Firstly, you can disable libraries (mostly). Though, if you do this, several startmenu items will disappear. (documents, personal, pictures, videos, etc). Here's the link.. How to Disable “Libraries” Feature in Windows 7? - Tweaking with Vishal

With the pointing personal folders, go to regedit and navigate to user shell folders... \hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\user shell folders.

Edit the personal key. Mine is set to a network location; a shared folder on a server. You can change most of them. Of course, you should consider taking a backup before you play with the registry.

If you have libraries enabled it will complain that the personal folder points to an unsupported location (M$ way of telling you they want you to do it their way, not your way). You can disable that nag tho.

It aint flash, but it works.

Please forgive if I should not have provided answers in this thread, of if you have already come across this solution.

Cheers Yanta but iv come to the conclusion that iv just got to put up with the libraries feature. If i get rid of it then my start menu entries etc go missing. Its not a big deal as i rarely use the start menu anyway but it just seems stupid that microsoft didnt give an option to get rid of this

As for the personal folder they have improved it however i still had to go into the registry when i installed 7 and change every C:\Users to D:\Users so that my app data etc is moved . I just dont get why they havent made moving it easier.

- As an administrator We should be able to have FULL control over every file on our system. No "Nags", No "Locked out" files, No bull. If I crash my system as an administrator, and have to slick the whole thing to recover, it's my own stupid fault.
(YES I'M SURE I WANT THAT PROGRAM TO CONTINUE.... JUST DO WHAT I SAY DANG It!)
Admin is already turned off, and not easily accessed. ...and for those who do research, "Big Brother" can be disabled without being an administrator. Please... Can we have FULL admin rights?

Items we don't want/use should have an option to NOT be installed (Not just disabled.).

I like having access to Icons in a group, (Control panel for instance.) without having to go through sub menus to find what I want. Please. Never take that away.
For those that still have an issue about no classic view in control panel, try the View link on the upper right hand side of the screen. This helped me. If there are still issues, please be specific. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site who might be able to help.

Have fore thought before changing names, and moving things. As I travel in my work, I find that I'm not the only one frustrated by this.

If people out there disagree; or I have mis-stated myself, I'm sure I will hear about it.

Microsoft Listens. (Please)
Just one persons diatribe.. Thank you.

Off topic note - Personal thanks for every bitch, and gripe that has been addressed here, and to the people who provided resolutions. There are still things that chap mi culito, and I have beat them to death in at least two threads. Most are giant in my mind, but actually small in reality; Some, I guess I'll have to get over.
Although it's not my primary function, I now get to go out in the "Real World", and help with peoples Win 7 "issues". (Yes... Me. God help us all.) Even though I mostly do Internet, and Networking, a lot of people have questions for me concerning Win 7. What I have learned in this "Negative thread" has been invaluable to me in my work, and is now helping others.
Thank you all,
SJM

Have yet to really use Win7 through I had a whirl with the RC before.
Things I don't like are the circular back, forward and Start buttons.
Also the way the whole navigation change compared to XP, really need to get used to finding the things I want all over again.

But its not so bad, problem one can be solved with visual styles and problem two is just a matter of time.
Until I go into really using it then maybe more major stuff perhaps.

Windows Explorer in my XP system was working fine.
I do not like the way Windows 7 farked it up by not allowing me to set it up
to operate in the same way as I could with XP.

Still searching for alternatives to Windows Explorer as the one in Win 7 leaves me less than
luke warm.

I just switched from Vista to Win 7. First of all, the language bar keeps popping out every time the UAC shows up. It's annoying! I set it to not dim and it fixed the problem. But the view button in the slide show gadget doesn't work. Tried everything and it still wouldn't work!!

Just some quick answers to your issues ...

  1. Due to results of extensive user research Microsoft has changed the layout of the navigation pane to a more data centric view - Libraries are the signature feature of the new explorer and even at the most basic will find the vast majority of required files quickly - based on what you are looking for rather that where you are looking for it.
  2. Although the default is set to open the library view this may be changed to show the computer view if required (check out the tutorials section here for various options)
  3. The "breadcrumb bar" still retains all the facilities for manual entry as previous versions - simply click and type, and it also retains the old style history

Things have changed but with a bit of use I actually find the changes are improvements

I don't have that problem at all, in fact Windows 7 seems better than Vista about it. It seems to remember the last window size it was. Try opening your browser, then clicking on the link. When the small box opens up, resize it, and close it, then click the link again. Does it still open small?

You should learn to use the click bar, it's the best windows explorer feature of vista/win7 and once you get to know how to use it, it's irreplaceable and fast.

seems I will need a screenshot, all I see is a crappy click bar where a small part of the current path is shown and a search box. There is no address bar for me to click on.

Anywhere to the right of the 'crappy click bar' > in the click bar. If it says "Libraries>' click anywhere to the right of the arrow, while still in the click bar. This turns it into a manual field entry.

Also check out folder options for
2 - drives are only viewable when computer is expanded.
On the first page of folder options down the bottom is an option to 'show all folders'. That might help out. (Folder options is under 'organize' in the top left of the explorer window.)

seems I am not the only unhappy windows explorer camper.

How to have each folder its own size?

someone blamed bill gates leaving to be the cause of these major changes in the gui, I do wonder if he is right.

The single biggest problem with windows 7 is the enforced changes in the windows explorer and task bar interfaces. Typically removed features that millions of windows customers have become accustomed to.

#1 rule in software development if you wish to try something new then always have an option to keep the old so as to not alienate loyal customers.

Personally I dont think it is by design I actually think these problems are cut features because in the end windows 7 did get rushed as microsoft wanted vista behind them.

No, that is not gone, simply click in the address bar anywhere to the right of the 'cumbersome click bar', and the address bar turns into a normal text field where you can type.

You should learn to use the click bar, it's the best windows explorer feature of vista/win7 and once you get to know how to use it, it's irreplaceable and fast.

I already had that show all folders enabled, surprisingly unticking it improved the behaviour and now computer is auto expanded.

Clicking the click bar does indeed turn it into an address bar thanks, so I guess now what I need is to make it a permenant address bar then I am getting somewhere.

So permenant address bar and computer at the top on the left auto expanded and I will be somewhat happy.

I don't have a lot of problems others have with Windows 7, does that mean they doesn't exist?

LOL. Oh my gosh I always love that one from software support companies. "It works on our computer equipped with that operating system so, everyone who it doesn't work for must have a problem with their system".

What a classic.
