What is a good gaming router?!?!?!?!

Hey,

I am looking at upgrading my router from the Linksys WRT54G Wireless G Router. I need some thing that can give me the full speed of my internet, I do a lot of gaming so I would need some thing that will give me a good connection and good speed for gaming. I am looking at this router D-Link Xtreme Wireless N Router (DIR-655), D-Link Xtreme Wireless N Router (DIR-655) : Wireless N Routers - Best Buy Canada
Would this Router be good for gaming and also to have a couple of computers attached as well?

The Linksys WRT54G's are extremely popular on the web. In fact, it's exactly what I use.

When you say you need something that can give you the full speed of your Internet, how fast is your internet connection? Mine gives me 15Mbps download speeds and my router supports 54Mbps...which is 3x faster than my Internet can even go. Even with some distance from my router to my wireless devices, the router itself is not my bottleneck.

That seems to be a great wireless router. You can have any good routers, but do you have enough bandwidth for heavy gaming and huge downloads? I have a Linksys G Router, there are 2 heavy gamers in my home, but we have a 20mbps bandwidth subscription from Charter and no issues at all.

I was talking to my ISP and they said in order to take full advantage of my internet connection speed I will require a Router. My ISP says if i have the right router I can get 10/100/1000 connection speed over a wired connection and wireless N speeds for wireless devices that support that.

Sounds like the "tech support" from India was jerking your chain. A router isn't going to magically get you a faster connection. You have a 6 MB Symatpico connection from looking here,

which your current router is more than good enough for. You want faster speed, you don't need a new router you need a faster plan.

I have the Dir-655. It is great for Xbox Live, it gives open NAT for two machines. I would assume it would be great for computer gaming also but cant verify that.

What they mean is that without the use of a router, you connect your 1 and only 1 computer to your internet connection and surf the web. In order to take full advantage of your internet connection, you want a router so that you can connect 1,2,3,5,10 different devices to your Internet connection and share it.

100% true, but they neglected to mention that this 10/100/1000 speed would be between all of the devices connected to your router. Not from the devices connected to the Internet. You will only get the speeds promised by your ISP for that. In my case, it's 15Mbps. Yours will vary.

Yes, wireless N is faster than wireless G. Again, it's mostly for devices connected on your local network. When these devices attempt to use the INternet, they will get the speed from the ISP. And since Wireless G can go 54Mbps...unless your ISP gives you more than that, it simply doesn't matter.

It's like buying the most elaborate pumping fire engine on the planet. If you pull up to a massive fire and connect to a garden hose....you are going to be limited by the water the garden hose can provide....not the amount the firetruck has the ability to pump.
