Really? I thought this war had already been fought? Microsoft lost.
But seriously, in reality, there was no real difference between the two as far as audio and visual quality are concerned. It all boiled down to who pitched their product better and to whom they pitched it to.

It does't really make any difference as HD-DVD has been discontinued, no new movies, no new players. It's the current generations betamax.

Yeah but Bluray is a total disaster.

They change the encryption keys and algos so often that I have to perform a full player update EVERY time I buy a new movie (Every 2-3 months or so). That takes approx 30 minutes. And this last time on Easter eve? 2.5 hours and multiple updates some direct and others from website through DVD-R later the movie "Hop" /still/ wouldn't play. $30 for a plastic Frisbee.

Blueray /literally/ makes kids cry! It punishes people that buy the disks while the pirates get everything they want for free anyway. I am totally done with Blueray and I hope it rots in hell!

Currently a 6 month old LG 3d stand alone player. But same issues with an older player as well.

Google "Can't play bluray disk in my player", the horror stories are rampant. Seriously a full class action lawsuit needs to be brought against all blueray player manufacturers, Sony and the publishers for this total disaster of a "product".

Yes, but what happens is, opps, key change, entire line of new movies comes out, fail to play in player till update, 3 months later. ooops, entire new encryption routine is instituted and all new movies use it (as they are released). All old players need major upgrade or they simply will never work again. Then depending on manufacturer, upgrade may not be available for weeks or months after movies are released.

It's SO BAD that some disks actually come with a disclaimer that "This disk may play properly on your player"... WTF? How do they get away with that? Over the last year especially it's been a real crapshoot and has just been getting worse.

Time to bail...

@fseal:

I don't hardly ever have to perform updates on my standalone Panasonic BR player or my PS3. BluRay has been just fine for me.

I don't think i have updated my Panasonic Player more than about 3-4 times total in the past 3 years that I have owned it. Any my updates take nowhere near 30 minutes. Maybe 3-5 minutes. Heck, my Panasonic Player has been in my bedroom for at least 1.5 years and it doesn't even have an internet connection that I can update with. And it's playing movies perfectly.

I have NEVER had a disc fail to play in my players due to the encryption algorithm changing. And I rent almost exclusively BluRay discs and have been for quite some time.

When I have performed the updates, it's always been in hopes that my discs will start up quicker.

Edit: I did Google 'Can't play bluray disk in my player" as you suggested and I honestly didn't find that much and most of what I found was from 2008.

I suppose one might be able to take away from that that LG players completely fscking suck or something. But the truth is I don't buy disks that often, and just how some people complain that every time they turn their xbox or ps3 on they have to do an update taking 5-20 minutes while others say they virtually never have to it really comes down to how often you DO use it and how bleeding edge you buy your movies. And well maybe LG does completely suck. Guess I need to buy my THIRD Bluray player in 3 years to keep up. (And I'm already on my second set of HDMI switches due to the same problem with the ever changing HDMI spec)

When I was searching for help on the non playable disk problem it was pretty rampant and always with new releases. The only seemingly "reliable" player is not surprisingly the PS3 which sony keeps updated on the sly every time you use it and of course since they are the gatekeepers of the changes they roll them out before anyone else has a chance.

Sony sits in a disturbingly anti-trust position of being a motion picture content provider, the owner of the format spec and a producer of the players...

I guess if you want to play with bluray you should go sony or go home :P Just not sure how much more crap I can take from them...

I suppose one might be able to take away from that that LG players completely fscking suck or something.
Well, if both of your players were LG players and they both had all of the problems that you described, I would have to agree that they do suck.

and just how some people complain that every time they turn their xbox or ps3 on they have to do an update taking 5-20 minutes while others say they virtually never have to it really comes down to how often you DO use it and how bleeding edge you buy your movies.
My PS3 and my Xbox360 certainly do update from time to time. Most updates are very quick and speedy. Only a major update would take anywhere near 5-20 minutes and those are rare. The overwhelming majority of updates on my game consoles are game updates.

As far as bleeding edge discs, I don't buy many discs at all. The movies I do buy are all kids and animated movies and I buy them as soon as they are released. But I do rent a fair number of movies and they are always new releases that have only been out a few days to a week...so I would count those as bleeding edge. I usually rent at least 1 movie a week.

Well, if my PS3 updates behind the scenes and I don't notice it, I don't really care. With that said, I can say that I also have a Panasonic DMP-BD35 and it's been as reliable as can be. Never, not once, a single problem that actually required an update to play a disc. And like I said, it doesn't have an ethernet connection and I cannot even remember the last time I updated it..but I would bet a dollar to a donut that's its been at least 18 months.

I guess if you want to play with bluray you should go sony or go home :P Just not sure how much more crap I can take from them...
Aside from my PS3, I don't use Sony myself. I had a bad experience with them once on a TV and won't buy any product from them that is also made by any other manufacturer. Since my PS3 is a Sony only product, I had no other choice.

I've heard of a problem here and there, but never anything as bad as what you have experienced. I would seriously dump those LG players and get something else. My dad has a Samsung, I have a Panasonic and of course my Sony PS3 and we have been trouble free.

Personally, I like blu ray better although the blu ray encrypted technology makes many players cannot play bluray very well.

Difference between blu ray and HD DVD in my opinion:

Blu-ray, is the name of a new optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.

Comparing to HD DVDs, blu-ray discs are more expensive, but hold more data.

Blu-ray Storage Capacity - Pre-recorded Playback Material (BD-ROM): Single-layer (25GB) - Dual-layer (50GB)
HD DVD Storage Capacity - Pre-recorded playback material (HD-DVD-ROM): Single-layer (15GB) - Dual-layer (30GB)

Thanks for all helping replies. Continuing with the same questions there are some more queries. I have also researched that the Blue-ray disc is better than the HD DVD because is stores media in a higher resolution than HD DVD. To how much extent you all support this wording?

This is my work computer.
I have another laptop running Windows 7 64 bit.
Another PC running Windows 8 64 bit pro.
Total of 3
Is this for your homework or something? :)

As far as I know, both Blu-ray and HD-DVD are 1080p resolution. I think that early HD-DVDs often had a higher bitrate than early Blu-ray discs however.

I like having all my game content in one disc, or my high quality movie in 1 disc.
With xbox= HD DVD Some games have 4 disc!!!

Data Storage is a huge PLUS
HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray -- the next Format War
^ BluRay is has the ability of upgrade in file size too
Umm, no, the XBOX 360 is not HD DVD, unless you have the added drive. The standard format for XBOX 360 is single layer and dual layer dvd.

The man speaks the truth plus they don't make hd dvds anymore for xbox either because not many ppl were willing to buy the added drive so it was a utter failure upon Microsofts part.Should have made the drive like that in the first place if they wanted to use them for the xbox.
