Hi Guys - an online friend is currently running a TV from his PC with an HDMI cable, and has asked me this question.

i’m wondering if i can set up a spare monitor into my current setup. my main monitor is plugged into the cpu and i have a hdmi wire running from the cpu to the tv. i don’t have a spare hdmi plug on the cpu.
i’m able to use both screens independently.

is it possible to setup the third screen to also work independently – e.g. so i can watch a movie from my computer on the tv, read websites off my usual monitor, and have the third monitor for something like a chat program ?

i figure i need an hdmi splitter – is this true ?

I have replied that I think it's not as simple as that, and that I THINK he needs a graphics card that will to support this. So, my question is as basic as: what
hardware would he need to be able to do what he wants. Just in general terms - not specifics, at this stage.

From how you've described it, you have 2 outputs and 3 screens, you need a graphics card that can support 3 outputs to use 3 screens, it's a fact, a splitter will only clone the display, not display a new desktop.

Hope this helps.
