What does that little 100MB partition in front of my C: partition do? Can it be eliminated? If so, how?

Mowerman

Its a partition that the win 7 installer sets up to decompress files, store temp items, etc. Its actually a g ood idea for a bunch of reasons but it can be removed.

The 100 MB system partition is used primarily as BitLocker partition for BitLocker encryption. Additionally, it also holds the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and boot files with boot manager for booting up the computer for troubleshooting when there is no Windows 7 installation DVD disc on hand.

As Tw33k said, there is no reason to remove it, and lots of reasons not to. Just pretend it's not there and let it do it's thing.

I suppose tw33k was joking. Because Windows will not let you delete it (it's required to boot)

It CAN be removed, but there is no reason to.

Of course it can, but not by simply right-clicking and deleting it within Disk Management...

I was the one who said leave it alone.

You could do it in older versions of Windows...manually. But it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to.

I believe that is put there if you install Windows 7 to a partition that hasn't been formatted or doesn't have a drive letter.
I formatted my unallocated partition before installing Windows 7 and don't have that lost 100MB.

That's right Joan. If you pre-format the hard disk before you install Windows, the 100MB partition will not be created.

For Windows 7 users who do not intend to use BitLocker, the 100 MB partition can be removed subsequently and easily in Disk Management, the built-in partition manager of Windows 7.

source: Hack to Remove 100 MB System Reserved Partition When Installing Windows 7 My Digital Life

If I mislead the OP then I'm sorry. As this partition was never made on my system my information came from third parties.

Having said that, I don't know why people are bothered with it. It's only 100mb it's not as though it's filling the hard drive.

I decided to delete the 100Mb partition using partition manager.
The laptop would no longer boot up at all.I had to do start up repair from disc to get the OS working again.
So I recommend leaving it alone.
