What's the Best Anti-virus?

Best AV?? Easy, virtualization. While it won't protect you against infected USB drives or the like, it will totally and completely protect you while browsing the web, which is where 99% of most infections come from. Sandboxie - Sandbox software for application isolation and secure Web browsing is an awesome free tool that will virtually (pun intended) eliminate all infections...........It is not a replacement to your AV, but rather it's the 1st line of defense that should be used by everyone.

The longer i am reading posts here on the forum the more i am inclined to get that sandboxie installed. Then i won't have to mention Linux any longer
It seems to be the only solution and i am wondering why Microsoft does not give something similar or even change their OS a bit and include something like that. They could even buy
them out; they've got money enough. Ah well, the wonderful world of IT.

Well, I have some news. I installed and did full scans with many products. Only Avira AntiVir Personal was able to detect three additional threats and remove them. Not only that, the browser hijack is gone.

My current setup from now on is, COMODO Firewall and Avira...

So what's the moral of the story?
1. There is no best AV program, at best 5-10 good ones that you have to try
one after the other till the infection is caught

2. Use sandboxie

3. oh...... forget it :D

Well my setup is a Budlight and watching College Football/golf.
So I guess my best AV is not going places I don't need to/downloading from unknown sites, and not opening e-mail from strangers.

Due to things happening on another thread of this forum it would not be a bad idea to give the generally accepted definitions of virus, malware, spyware, trojans, etc.etc. Maybe here, maybe somewhere else on the forum.
There seems to be a lot of confusion or sloppy use of the terms, not only here but also on internet and by the various anti-whatever suppliers, especially by the "free" ones. As far as i can see "virus" is a subsection of "malware" and although somewhat incomplete i usually stick to this:
Defining Malware: FAQ

It seems especially important to define what the definiton of "virus" includes.

I am new to all this... but a thoroughly insightful post, thank you. I first used Norton on my Windows Vista (Packard Bell) laptop and I didn't think it was up to much to be honest. It was a paid for security that I repeatedly had problems with. I soon switched to AVG. My laptop didn't take to this program at all. Everything slowed down on me and became somewhat jilted and in the end began to freeze. After some time, I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials. I also use this security program on my Windows Seven PC. I think it is just brilliant. Works perfectly for both the laptop and desktop. It seems to tick off most of the items on your check list. Again, thank you for a very informative post!

Here is the best solution to prevent any and all virus and hack attempts I've found.

The good thing is that its 100% guaranteed to work for everyone, without the need for any additional software.

First, Shutdown your computer.

Next, look on the back of your PC and locate a small cable that looks like the one in the picture below.
ethernet.jpg

As illustrated, push in on the retaining clip, and gently remove it from the PC.
Please be careful you do not damage anything.

Now start up your PC and you are good to go.

No need for any extra programs, you are 100% gaurnteed to be safe from Internet nasties.
Please note, that by reconnecting this cable, you will again be vulnerable.

Hope this helps.

:p
